Leadership Opportunities

Student leadership programs are very important to Chemeketa’s college life. They provide financial aid to help students meet their educational expenses, help college staff do important work and provide valuable work experience to students.

There are numerous opportunities for you to get involved at Chemeketa, gain work experience, and pay for college.

Paying for college

Students may be paid at an hourly rate or a tuition waiver. Federal Work Study recipients and students looking for volunteer opportunities are eligible to apply.

Application

Students are selected through an application and interview process to determine their interests, abilities and experience.

Associated Students of Chemeketa (ASC)

The Associated Students of Chemeketa (ASC) is a group of student leaders who represent their fellow peers at Chemeketa. This is a great opportunity for you to develop multiple job related skills, including leadership skills, time management skills, team work skills, computer skills, and build your resume for future jobs or scholarships. ASC’s main tasks are -


Represent students at Chemeketa

Work closely with students to help improve their well-being at Chemeketa

Receive student concerns and take them to the appropriate bodies of authorities

Manage tasks and projects as approved by the ASC Student Council

Students must maintain a term GPA of 2.75 and successfully complete 12 credits each term.


Most ASC openings happen during spring term, but you are encouraged to apply any time of year.

CAMP Mentor

CAMP Mentors participate in mentoring skills training and weekly meetings with the Mentor Supervisor. Maintain a weekly log on assigned CAMP students. Meet weekly with each assigned student. Assist in monitoring students’ success and in CAMP classes when needed. Attend leadership conferences/workshops as assigned. Do student follow up via phone calls or e-mail. Assist with student projects related to CAMP and CAMP presentations at high schools/conferences. Perform other duties as assigned. Mentors must be former CAMP students.


Mentors must maintain acumulative GPA of 3.0 throughout the academic year and successfully complete 12 credits each term.

CAMP Tutor

CAMP Tutors must complete Level I Tutor Training within the first two terms, and must demonstrate proficiency in subject area. Tutors work with minimum supervision. CAP Assistants

The CAP (College Access Programs) Assistants perform receptionist duties and provide support for all College Access Programs such as CAMP, TRIO, TRIO Pre-college, and the Chemeketa Completion Program (CCP). This team will assist with the Resource Center's front desk and the main office's front desk by welcoming students, staff, and the community in a friendly, helpful, and approachable manner, and providing department information.

 

Resource Center front desk duties include -

  • Welcome and check-in students
  • Monitor the Resource Center
  • Maintain computers, lab and resource center security and keep work areas clean
  • Answer phones or assist staff/students with computer equipment and/or software use
  • Answer general student questions
  • Other duties as assigned

Main Office front desk duties include -

  • Welcome and greet clients (students, staff, and the community)
  • Provide CAP information and reply to phone, e-mail, and in person inquiries
  • Schedule appointments
  • Answer main phone line
  • Assemble various materials and packets of information for distribution
  • Assist with special projects such as labeling or preparing files
  • Assist with college activities such as registration, conferences, and special events
  • Other duties as assigned

CAP Tutor

CAP tutors must complete Level I Tutor Training within the first two terms, and must demonstrate proficiency in subject areas. Tutors work with minimum supervision, providing individual educational assistance to students. Tutors will meet with each student that schedules an appointment online, assist in monitoring students’ success and maintain weekly tutor logs. They must demonstrate problem- solving skills and communicate regularly with the tutor supervisor and other CAP staff. Tutors may perform various clerical tasks and other duties as assigned.


Tutors must maintain a cumulative 3.0 GPA throughout the academic year and complete a minimum of 6 credits per term.

Conversation Table Leaders

Thank you for your interest in leading a conversation table and building bridges between cultures. Your willingness to share your native language(s) and help others informally learn about language and culture enhances our college community and enriches learning for all. As peer leaders representing International Programs/English Institute, conversation table leaders apply current cross-cultural communication skills and continue to build them.

Chemeketa Press Design/Production

Chemeketa Press Design/Production interns work on various projects related to Chemeketa's ongoing textbook affordability initiative. They put into practice the skills they are learning in the Visual Communications program through graphic and web design and production work. They gain hands-on experience working with the "clients" of the Press and develop skills in handling that relationship with regularly adjusting goals and deadlines. They gain experience effectively managing their time, working with a team of graphic designers and editors, critiquing and consulting with others, and managing project processes and skills. Interns receive other hands-on training that helps them be successful in their program as well as in graphic design industries.

 

Students must maintain a term GPA of 2.0 and successfully complete 6 credits each term.

Chemeketa Press Editorial

Chemeketa Press Editorial interns work on various projects related to Chemeketa's ongoing textbook affordability initiative. They gain hands-on experience working with the "clients" of the Press and develop skills in handling that relationship with regularly adjusting goals and deadlines. They gain experience effectively managing their time, working with other professional editors and designers, critiquing and consulting with others, and managing project processes and skills. Interns receive other hands-on training that helps them be successful in their program as well as in publishing or business industries.

Design OP

The Design OP team work on retention projects by putting into practice skills they are learning in the Visual Communications program through graphic design and/or interactive media. Simultaneously, they learn how to manage a small business, work with a team of graphic designers, critique and consult with each other, project management processes and skills, consult with clients to assist clients with their design needs, and hands-on training which helps students be successful in their program as well as successful in the graphic design industries as business leaders. Various duties may also include photography, video, web design, and working with the Courier Brief's editor to design, print, and deliver the school newspaper.

 

Students not in the Visual Communications program who are proficient and have a passion for photography, video, and/or web design, are encouraged to apply.

Disability Services Support Technician

Provide customer service at our AIM (Accessible Information Management) help desk, which includes checking in appointments for testing and assisting students navigate the AIM database. Responsible for editing and converting materials into alternate formats. Responsible for captioning videos and transcribing audio files. Scribe and read for students with disabilities both within the classroom and during tests. Attend meetings and training as needed. Performs other duties as assigned.


Students must maintain a 2.75 term GPA and be enrolled in a minimum of 6 credit hours each term.

English as a Foreign Language (EFL) Tutors

Assist international speakers of other languages studying basic English as a peer tutor. Provide learners speaking and listening practice. Assist students in understanding & completing homework assignments. Provide help with basic English grammar, reading, writing, and vocabulary development.

Environmental Stewardship Assistants

The Environmental Stewardship Assistants help track anad analyze environmental data, do light office work, data entry, complete inventories, and recruit students to events.

Preferred Skills: experience with MIcrosoft Word and Excel. Some of their main tasks may include:

  • Assist with environmental data gathering (e.g. fuel consumption, building statistics, etc).
  • Update inventory of hazardous chemicals.
  • Assist with data entry about recycling, composting and trash pick up.
  • Assist with Earth Day planning.
  • Staff tables during events to promote sustainability and recruit people to events.

Assistants must maintain a cumulative GPA of 2.75 and successfully complete 12 credits each term.

Evening Study Night Tutors

The Evening Study Mentors serve as a resource to students utilizing the evening study hours offered by Chemeketa’s Multicultural Center. This position will provide academic assistance to students in addition to campus referrals and college skills guidance.


Mentors must maintain a cumulative GPA of 3.0, successfully complete 12 credits each term, and obtained a B or higher in 100-level coursework or higher in at least one of the following subjects: Math, Reading, Writing, and Computer Science.

Gender Equity Education Facilitator

 

The Gender Equity Education Facilitators work in collaboration with the Compliance Director/Title IX Coordinator to coordinate, promote, and facilitate educational opportunities for students as related to relationship and sexual violence. Students will develop skills in project management, time management, facilitation, verbal communication, while gaining knowledge of applicable laws and regulations.

 

Students must have previous experience as a student leader, ability to communicate well in a public setting, and demonstrable time management skills. Students must maintain a term GPA of 2.75 and successfully complete 12 credits each term.

Financial Aid Peer Assistants

Financial Aid Peer Assistants work in the Financial Aid office and have the unique opportunity to assist other students in all aspects of the college experience. As a peer assistant, you will gain valuable leadership and customer service skills while helping other students with their financial aid questions, as well as our college’s online resources.

High School Partnerships Mentors

The HSP Mentor Program pairs first-year students with (current or former) HSP student volunteers who will help guide them through their first terms at Chemeketa. As an HSP Mentor, you will have the opportunity to develop strong leadership skills as you assist students with their transition into college life.

 

Must be a current or former High School Partnerships student and maintain 12 credits each term.

International Ambassadors

Assist with recruitment, orientation, and retention programs offered to international and study/service learning abroad students. Respond to requests from prospective and continuing students. Assist all staff in department to deliver services, activities, and training. Conduct campus tours. Serve as peer leaders for international education programs. Coordinate student involvement in the international community with International Club and Associated Students of Chemeketa (ASC).

Library Clerk

Library Clerk I (FWS Job #14485)

Shelve library materials and maintain shelf order. May help patrons and staff locate requested items. Use Library database and basic computer applications to accomplish tasks. General office tasks - photocopying, scanning, packaging, mailing, filing and other duties. Good customer service skills and ability to work with minimum supervision.

 

Library Clerk II (FWS Job #14483)

Six months of library experience are required for this position. In addition to Library Clerk I duties, Library Clerk II work at the Circulation desk with the ability to work in a busy environment and prioritize tasks - answer phones, collect fines, and check items in and out using Library database. Help patrons locate materials, give directional and informational assistance, and assist with use of equipment and student technology.


Library Clerks must able to reach upper and lower library shelves, be enrolled in a minimum of 6 credits, and pass the Dewey Decimal skills test.

Multicultural Student Services (MSS)

The MSS team members are responsible for maintaining the Multicultural Center Facilities, and coordinating ongoing cultural awareness projects, and provide support for the cultural student clubs. The MSS team plans events, creates flyers, posters, and maintains a designated display case, and bulletin board which are used to promote upcoming multicultural events. In addition, the MSS Team is a resource for providing general information to the public by communicating effectively and collaboratively throughout the campus community.

Peer Assistants

Peer Assistants work in Advising and Counseling and Career Services and have the unique opportunity to assist other students in all aspects of the college experience. As a peer assistant, you will gain valuable leadership and customer service skills while helping other students with class registration, as well as our college’s online resources such as financial aid, career assessments and much more! You will also play an important role in new student advising sessions and other special events. Polk Building Inspection Leader

The position assits with the overall retention and recruitment efforts for the Building Inspection program at the Polk Center. They lead the Chemeketa Chapter of ICC; participate in advisory meetings; attend industry related meetings; plan, publicize and coordinate various events on and off campus; and mentor new students entering the program.

Polk Peer Assistant and Recruitment Leader

The position assists with the overall retention and recruitment efforts at the Polk Center. They assist with the planning, publicizing and coordination of various events at the Polk Center, and also assist with high school recruitment events throughout the school year, held on and off campus. This includes working information tables, speaking on student panels, staffing college fairs, and assisting with Oregon Promise application and FAFSA forms.

Public Safety Office Assistants

  • Works various shift hours based on scheduling Monday through Friday
  • Provides customer service information on security, safety, first aid, facility usage, card access/key control, parking and traffic management, and other college functions to visitors, students, staff and faculty
  • Provides clerical support for Public Safety Officers
  • Inputs data with high degree of accuracy, including parking permits, incident reports and key requests into established computer programs in a prescribed manner
  • Operates two-way radio, and computer equipment; issues college keys and access cards to staff
  • Uses appropriate technology tools to accomplish job functions; understands and utilizes available technology as communication and data gathering tools
  • Understands and collaborates effectively with a variety of students, staff and the public from diverse cultural, social, economic and educational backgrounds
  • Provides information and responds appropriately to a variety of requests for information and assistance, including emergency calls through the 911 system

Student Ambassadors

Student Ambassadors are essential to the college’s marketing and outreach efforts. They are often the first point of contact for a prospective student. Ambassadors lead campus tours,communicate with prospective students in person and online, maintain our prospective student database, and are involved in a variety of public and community relations events. Ambassadors gain valuable experience in networking, communication, teamwork, customer service, public relations and event coordination.

Student Retention Assistants

Come and get the customer service skills you need as a Student Retention Assistant. You will learn clerical skills on the job and work on retention related activities that will improve student success outcomes. You will assist in maintaining department records, filing, inputting data, scheduling, answering phones, ordering office supplies, postings, Lending Library, and other various duties including conducting campus tours and presentations.

Theater Technician III

A Theater Technician III performs a variety of duties such as assist with publicity, act as stage/house manager or assistant director, and hang and focus lights, operate light/sound controls. Work independently, with minimum supervision, be able to lift 35 lbs., and must be able to work some weekends and evenings.

 

Students must maintain a 2.50 GPA and be enrolled in a minimum of 6 credits.

Tutor assist students in the Student Computer Center located in the Library using computer software to complete course assignments. Assists with Technology equipment (scanner, printer, and photocopier) and wireless connections. Paid mandatory tutor training is included.

Woodburn Peer Leaders

The Woodburn Center is looking for leaders within the student population who wish to gain work experience within a wide range of positions. They focus on the planning, publicizing and coordination of various events at the Woodburn Center, including student clubs, cultural events, and community service events. The Peer Leaders serve as positive role models and representatives for the student of Woodburn.

The Woodburn Center is looking to fill the following positions-

Yamhill Valley Recruitment and Retention Student Leaders

These 6 positions (3 talent waivers and 3 federal work study) assist in the overall retention and recruitment efforts at Yamhill Valley Campus. They focus on the planning, publicizing and coordination of various events at the Yamhill Valley Campus, including student clubs, cultural events, and community service events. They also assist with high school recruitment events throughout the school year, held on and off campus. This includes giving campus tours, speaking on student panels, and staffing college fairs. Additionally, one of the Recruitment and Retention Student Leaders will be an active member of the Associated Students of Chemeketa (ASC), which is the student government for Chemeketa Community College. The ASC Rep will attend the ASC weekly meetings at the Salem campus and report on the events and happenings at YVC. They will also work to strengthen the collaboration between the Salem and Yamhill Valley Campuses.
