The 2010 Oregon Diversity Institute planning committee is issuing this Request for Proposals for presentations that focus on the core theme of the conference Discover Cultural Awareness: It’s not Just Black and White. Please submit your proposal around one of the key theme areas listed below.

Proposals are due no latter than 11:59 pm on October 15, 2010.

  1. Organizational Shift: Cultural awareness and competence in the workplace

    Sessions in this theme will provide participants with opportunities to gain cultural awareness and competency with issues related to the workplace including policy and creating conditions for success, diversity in the workplace, and having courageous conversations to promote organizational shift.

  2. LGBTQ Community:
    1. Equality in the 21st century
    2. Civil rights
    3. Gay rights

Sessions in this theme focus on issues relating to civil and equal rights in the LGBTQ community. Issues include but are not limited to gay marriage, acceptance, and homoseuxality and religion.

  1. Student Leadership and Empowerment:
    1. Increasing student persistence and retention
    2. Through service learning

    Sessions in this theme will highlight completed or ongoing work that promotes student leadership and empowerment that utilize service learning, civic engagement, community services and co-curricular activities.

  2. Poverty, preparedness and Oregon: Creating a climate of excellence in education and the workplace

    Sessions in this theme will address the persistence of poverty as it relates to academic and workforce preparedness and how academic institutions can better meet the needs of business.

  3. Immigration Legislation: What does it mean to your institution

    Sessions in this theme will address the complex issues of immigration as it relates to legislation, language, and intercultural conflict in the workplace.

Sessions at the 2010 Oregon Diversity Institute conference will be 1 hour and 15 minutes in length. Proposals are invited from K–12 teachers and administrators, college/university faculty, college/university pre-service students, representatives of various educational groups, business community leaders, and community activists. Do not submit a proposal that sells a specific service, or organization. All sessions should provide learners with tools and ideas to apply at their institutions free of charge.

Proposal Submission

  1. Single Cover Page for all submissions to include the following:
    • Title of session

    • Session organizer. List name, title, institution, mailing address, home and office phone number, and email. We are seeking diversity among presenters. If the organizer or additional presenters are members of a marginalized group, please indicate which group(s).

    • Additional presenter(s). List names, titles, institutions, addresses, emails, and membership in marginalized group (if applicable).

    • Summary for conference program. Describe the session in 30 words or less for use in the conference program. Be precise in describing the content of the session to aid attendees in selecting topics relevant to their interests. The Oregon Diversity Institute reserves the right to edit the summary.

    • Please state what level of cultural competency the session is aimed at. Beginning, Intermediate, or Proficient.

  2. Proposal Description for all submissions should consist of the following:

    • Title of session

    • Description of the presentation. The description needs to be typed in MS Word, double-spaced, and is limited to 250 words. To ensure blind peer review, please do NOT include presenter names or institutions, or any other information that will identify you or your institution in the description. Preference will be given to interactive sessions that provide concrete actions useful to attendees.

    • Please state what level of cultural competency the session is aimed at. Beginning, Intermediate, or Proficient.
