Learning Center for Adult Basic Education and GED Preparation
We have many classes to help you earn the credits and skills you need to receive a General Educational Development (GED) certificate. We also offer credit classes to help improve the basic skills which are important when you enroll in future college-level courses. Contact the Santiam Center for orientation and testing information. Determine, with your instructor, the days and times to meet your educational goals.

This lab includes fundamentals of addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division in problems involving whole numbers, fractions, decimals, ratios, percentages and geometric measurements and formulas.

Introduces basic algebraic and geometric techniques and applications. Includes signed numbers, elements of algebra, simple equations and formulas, measurements and conversions, angles, perimeters, and areas of common geometric figures.

Introductory Algebra MTH060, four credits, Joe Franchini, instructor, $270.

This lecture class gives students, with no algebra background, a strong, fundamental background in beginning algebra. Covers signed numbers, elementary algebraic expression, manipulation and equation solving. Describes concepts using verbal, numerical, graphic, and symbolic forms.

This class covers linear equations, systems, inequalities and quadratic equations in verbal, numerical, graphical and symbolic forms. Also covers negative exponents, scientific notation, and dimensional analysis.
Intermediate Algebra MTH095, four credits, Rod Lee, instructor, $270.

This class introduces the study of functions with emphasis on power, linear, quadratic, exponential and rational functions. Uses a variety of methods, including logarithms to solve equations.

Prepare for College Level Writing & College Level Writing
Basic Writing WR049, four credits, Beth Anundi, instructor $270.

Focuses on practicing essential writing skills that give flexibility in academic writing. Introduces the language used by writing instructors and authors of college-level readers and/or handbooks. Emphasizes fluency in the writing process through use of invention strategies, drafting, revision, and proofreading and editing. Covers critical analysis of the organization, central idea, and other authors’ perspectives to develop and extend thinking and understanding.
Fundamentals of Writing WR090, four credits, Beth Anundi, instructor $272.

Focuses on writing essentials that will build confidence in writing for a variety of purposes. Examines the role that language mastery plays using discussion, reading, lectures, and extensive writing practice. Presents and reinforces all sentence concepts in the context of student-written paragraphs and longer pieces of writing. Applies all concepts directly to both academic and workplace writing and are also connected to outside reading.

Covers the mechanical and linguistic aspects of writing and other skills needed in college writing courses. Course may be repeated for a maximum of two credits.

Field work to be announced will replace some of the lab class hours. $283. Studies plate tectonic and exotic terrains; geomorphic provinces of Oregon; use of topographic maps; mountain building processes, volcanism and platonism and the geomorphic work of glaciers. Covers mountainous regions of Oregon and Washington, including Blue Mountains, Klamath Mountains, Cascade Range, Coast Range - Willamette Valley and Olympics - Puget Lowland; earthquakes, faults and tsunamis in the Pacific Northwest.

Language Classes
Bonjour! French Conversation Beginning (CRN 35858) GwenEllyn Anderson, instructor, non-credit, Tuesdays and Thursdays, Sept 30 - Oct 23, 6:00-8:20 p.m. Santiam Center, for $80. Class is an introduction to the fundamentals of the French language and can assist you in dining out or aid you in your next trip to Paris!
¡Hola! Conversational Spanish (CRN 37248) You can add a multitude of advantages to your everyday life by taking this non-credit conversational Spanish class with Duncan Tucker, instructor. Whether you want to learn Spanish to order your favorite foods, to add “bilingual” to your resume or to enjoy conversations with native speakers, this class will help you! This is a non-credit class on Tuesdays from 6:00 - 7:50 p.m. at the Chemeketa Santiam Center and costs $80.
Fall Driver Ed classes at a location near you
Salem campus, Silverton HS and Dallas Center
Chemeketa Driver Education program teaches—Line of Sight Path of
Travel; Reference points; 10 good driving habits for low risk driving. We are
affordable and have classes at convenient locations, dates and times. This
program is ODOT approved.
The goal of the program is to eliminate preventable accidents and to prepare young drivers for a complex driving environment. This traffic safety course is endorsed by the Oregon Department of Transportation and includes 34 hours of classroom and 12 hours of behind-the-wheel instruction.
The program serves students ages 15 through adult. Cost for students with an Oregon instruction permit who are under 18 is $260, and cost for adults with an Oregon instruction permit and/or student with a license is $285.
To register students will need a photocopy of permit or license, front and back; a completed enrollment form, and payment. Pre-registration is required. Belly Dancing, Traditional 1
(CRN 38577) Instructor Donna Bush will
introduce you to traditional belly dance movements known as cabaret style belly
dance. This class will cover basic, Egyptian, Arabic, arm, hip, grapevine,
Aeda, and camel movements. It includes a warm-up, teaching and review session,
body and belly roll practice, shimmy practice, and free dance time. 7:30
- 8:50 p.m. Mondays, Sept 29 - Dec 1, costs $60 and will be held
at the Cascade Development Center in Aumsville.
Start those holiday presents with some
special bling! Jewelry Making
(CRN
36171) Let instructor Megan Nelson teach you how to create beautiful beaded
jewelry for those needed presents and for yourself! This class will include
creating your very chain link bracelet with wire and beads. Supplies will be
available for purchase at the class. This class is $25 plus supplies on Sunday,
Nov 2, from 12:00 - 4 p.m. at the Santiam Center.
Tai Chi Movement
(CRN 37249) Instructor Dennis Gifford will
teach you how to relax your mind and condition your body by learning the slow,
fluid movements of this classic form of Chinese exercise. Enjoy the many
physical and mental health benefits. This non-credit class is at the Cascade
Community Family and Child Development Center in Aumsville, Wednesdays, at 6:00 - 7:20 p.m. and
costs $60.
Beginning Computers
Let instructor Derek
Goin teach you the basics of computers. This four part class includes:
- Including keyboard, mouse, Windows and word processing documents.
- Move on to learn more about word processing, editing, printing, and details about organizing files and folders.
- The advance class will teach you about clip art, word art, formatting, spreadsheets, bullets and borders.
- Finally the last class will introduce the Internet, e-mail and the software that brings it all together. Provides a hands-on opportunity to learn the basics of using the Internet.
Each non-credit class is $56 and held from 10 - 11:50 a.m. Each part 1, 2, 3, and 4 will be taught at the same time. The first session is Sept. 29 - Oct. 15 on Mondays and Wednesdays. The second session will be Oct. 27 - Nov. 12.
