Education Transfer
Chemeketa Community College offers a number of opportunities for you to explore a career in teaching. Chemeketa¥s reputation in training students for careers as instructional assistants and workers in early childhoold education is well known, but it¥s also a great place to begin your education if you are planning to continue your education beyond two years and become a classroom teacher. Chemeketa provides a number of special programs to help you decide if a career in teaching is right for you.
Western Oregon University, Portland State University, and Oregon State University encourage students to gain as much teaching background and experience as possible at Chemeketa Community College before transferring into their teacher licensing programs.
Each of these three universities have transfer agreements with Chemeketa that encourage students to take anywhere from 12-45 credits of teacher preparation courses here, where you can gain valuable experience and training in teaching during your freshman and sophomore years. The Education Courses at Chemeketa provide you with the foundation and practical experience you need to successfully pursue your dream of being a teacher.
Portland State, Oregon State, and Western Oregon each have very specific course requirements to make the transfer process go smoothly, so please be in touch with an Education Advisor very early in the year. The following are a few highlights from each University.
Western Oregon University recommends that Elementary and Middle School Education majors attending Chemeketa pursue an Associates of Arts Oregon Transfer degree, and take specific courses within that degree program that Western requires of Education majors. You can satisfy one term of their teaching licensing requirements at Chemeketa by successfully completing ED101, ED110, ED123 and ED133. Please see one of the Education advisors listed below for specific course requirements.
Portland State University and Oregon State University recommend that Education majors pursue an Associates of General Studies degree with an Education certificate from Chemeketa. This degree includes 45 credit hours of Education courses at Chemeketa and provides an extensive background in teaching and learning, as well as a full year of teaching experience in schools before transferring to the university. Please see one of the education instructors listed below for specific course requirements.
Courses of Interest to Education Majors
Our advisors can tell you about additional Chemeketa courses for Education majors. For example, Math 211, 212 and 213 Foundations of Elementary Mathematics meet the math transfer requirement of all three universities and provide future teachers with the background they need to teach math at the elementary level. For those students who are interested in teaching math at the middle or high school levels, Math 111 provides the foundation for further math studies at Chemeketa and the university level. Math Instructors Phyllis Leonard, Bob Chesley and Ken Anderson would be happy to advise you further on a teaching career in mathematics.

All three universities require that Education majors have a good background in science, and Chemeketa has developed several science courses with the Education major in mind. For example, in Biology 101, you can work with science concepts in an elementary classroom to meet part of your course requirements. In this class, you will look at how to teach science concepts while you learn about science in fun and interesting ways. If science is your passion, science instructors Doug Ure and David Connoy can advise you about a teaching career at the middle or high school levels in science.

Education Certificate Program
If you want to find out if a career in Education is right for you, Chemeketa¥s one year Education Certificate program is the answer. In one year you will learn about how children learn, how to manage a classroom, how to help children with learning and language challenges, how to use technology to aid you in teaching, and how schools function in our society. You can also choose to specialize in one of the following three areas:

If you decide that teaching is the career for you, all of your courses will transfer to Oregon State University or Portland State University so that you can pursue your teaching license.
