Engineering
Roads, bridges, water supply systems and subdivisions. We take these huge networks for granted, yet they are all vital to the strength of our economy. From the smallest house to a hydroelectric power plant, each of these structures begins with an idea and a design, combining ingenuity, creativity and the power of the computer.
Imagine being part of the big picture. Chemeketa can take you there.
Civil Engineering
Chemeketa offers two different programs to help get a career in Civil Engineering. The one-year certificate prepares you for entry-level surveying and drafting positions. As a graduate of the two-year program, you may assist in planning, design and construction of projects. You may also go into public safety and services dealing with water supply and wastewater treatment systems. As a technician on construction projects, you might be estimating costs, writing specifications, inspecting, surveying, drafting or designing. Coursework in the two-year program includes basic engineering science, communication skills, psychology, and environmental and sanitary engineering.
Computer-Assisted Drafting
If you are interested in Computer-Assisted Drafting, there are several options: a certificate or an associate's degree in Computer-Assisted Drafting, and an associate's degree in Computer-Aided Design/Computer-Aided Manufacturing or Mechanical Design.
A number of courses in this program are also offered online, to better fit into your schedule:
- Introduction to AutoCAD
- Advanced AutoCAD
- Introduction to MicroStation PC
- Civil Drafting and Design
- Applied Statistics
- Applied Strength of Materials
Engineering Transfer
Oregon State University offers bachelor's degrees in Biological, Chemical, Civil, Electrical and Computer, Environmental, Geological, Industrial and Manufacturing, Mechanical, Metallurgical, Mining and Nuclear Engineering, as well as Construction Engineering Management and Engineering Physics. Portland State offers degrees in Civil, Computer, Electrical and Mechanical Engineering. Chemeketa can offer a program that closely follows the pre-engineering program at both of these universities and is similar to other Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Science programs in Engineering. If you plan to apply for admission to the professional engineering program at Oregon State, you must meet pre-engineering course requirements, which vary according to the field you choose. If you plan to enroll at Portland State, you should consult with an engineering advisor at that university.
If you haven' t been to Chemeketa recently, your first step should be a visit to the college. While there you can talk to an advisor and learn what the college can do to help you reach your goal. You can arrange a time to take the college's free placement tests, which will help determine whether or not you need to take some basic skills classes in mathematics, reading or writing before enrolling in the program.
Through Chemeketa's Credit for Prior Learning program, you may be able to earn credit for learning acquired through job, community or volunteer service, non-credit classes or individual study.
Certain high school classes may be applied toward an associate degree, so talk to a career and college counselor at your high school about earning college credits while still in high school.
