The Career
Hospitality and Tourism Management is an exciting and diverse industry with an increasing number of opportunities. You can work at tourist attractions, hotels, restaurants, parks or tourist bureaus, here, in the U.S., or you can aim your dreams as far away as your imagination can take you. Hospitality and Tourism Management is one of Oregon's primary industries because of the state's number and variety of outdoor activities and scenic areas. Choosing a career in this rapidly growing field doesn't limit you to Oregon, however, or even the Pacific Northwest, as travel and tourism is the nation's second largest industry.
The tourism industry includes more than 15 interrelated businesses, from lodging establishments, airlines and restaurants to cruise lines, car rental firms, travel agents and tour operators. Directly or indirectly, tourism employs one in every seven Americans.
As an example, the restaurant industry employs 11.6 million people, making it the nation's largest private sector employer. This industry provides work for almost nine percent of those employed in the U.S. and is a ladder to management opportunities. By 2010, restaurant industry employment is expected to reach 13 million.
