Eye of the Storm
Hoop Season Tips Off
The 2009-10 basketball season has begun with both teams opening the season with high expectations.
The men opened their schedule with two wins at the K&T Steal classic hosted by the College of Southern Idaho. The Storm men opened the tournament with an eight point victory over the host and nationally ranked Golden Eagles. The second game, the Storm took on Lethbridge College from Alberta, Canada. The Kodiacs participated in the Canadian National tournament a year ago. The Storm started strong and cruised to a twenty-three point win and tournament championship. The team was led by all tournament selection Shiloh Row-land and tournament MVP Tyrone Phillips.
The Storm returned home and recorded two more victories. The first home win was a sixty-five point trouncing of the Linfield J.V. Wildcats. Then a convincing seventeen point win over Blue Mountain the following day.
The Women also opened up their season on the road. They loaded into the vans a little short on numbers due to injuries and two players finishing their soccer season. They faced Blue Mountain in the opener and battled hard but were unable to get a win losing by eight points. They then traveled to Treasure Valley for the second game of the trip. Again with a valiant effort they were unable to secure a victory losing by twenty. Even though they had a tough start it should be an exciting season for the women.

Storm Soccer Shows League Dominance
2009 saw the men return for their second season anxious to defend their Southern Region title, while the women were hoping to establish themselves as contenders. It was a season that proved to be above any expectation either team would have.
The women began their second season hoping to improve on last years performance and did not disappoint. Blasting their way to a 13-2-1 record. They began league play after only one preseason game, which resulted in a victory. The one game was enough as the Storm women rolled through the first ten league games 9-0-1 before suf-fering their first loss. They re-bounded with two more wins and captured their first league title. This success also propelled them to their first appearance in the NWAACC Soccer Champion-ships. The Storm battled top ranked Walla Walla in the semifi-nals but fell short. True to form they responded the next day to win and capture a third place finish in the NWAACC. For their efforts eight of the ladies were chosen to the All Region team. They were Norma Martinez, Vicky Cruz, Erika Flores, Esmer-alda Arredondo, Taylor Vande-hey, Elisabeth Sandoval, Amy Pelaez-Marin, and Pilar Gonza-les.
The men went through the sea-son with a target on their back after last seasons championship game appearance. The men started fast and never slowed down. Without disappointment they went undefeated in the preseason with a 6-0-1 record. They continued this roll through league remaining undefeated going into their first round play-off match. In a great match they defeated Peninsula College to qualify for the Championship
Tournament. The semifinal matchup was a rematch of last seasons Championship game against Walla Walla. Unfortu-nately they could not repeat their season success and were defeated 1-0. The next day, despite the disappointing loss they responded to win the NWAACC Tournament third place game and finished the season with a victory. Because of their efforts the following players were selected to the All Region team. These players were Gus Bermudez, Eric Branch, Tyler Hagen, Vicente Reyes, Jose Carbrera, Jose Su-moza, Jorge Flores, and Marshall Reese. Gus Bermudez was also named Southern Region M.V.P. and head coach Marty Limbird was chosen Southern Region Coach of the Year. The men also finished the season ranked 10th nationally.
Volleyball completes another great year
With many returners and as many expectations the 2009 storm volleyball team put to-gether another year full of suc-cess. Coming off an undefeated season the year before this years team did a great job of creating their own identity. While playing a strong and busy preseason schedule the had a non-league record of 21-14. This
propelled them to a second place league finish with an 8-2 record. Their finish earned them a spot in the NWAACC volleyball Championship tournament at Mt. Hood. After a tough first round loss, they bounced back to win four straight matches before losing their second game. The second loss ended their season with a 33-18 record and a
4th place finish in the NWAACC. Three athletes were recognized as All League performers, First Team: Tabbie Smith and Aubrie Concannon, Second Team: Nicole Kenney. Tabbie Smith was also recognized for her ef-forts being selected Second Team All NWAACC Tournament and First Team AVCA All American.
Gretchen Schuette Athletics golf tournament date set
The date for the 2010 Gretchen Schuette Athletics Golf Tournament has been set for June 18th.
Gretchen was president at Chemeketa from July 2001-June 2007. She continues to be an advocate and one of our most loyal supporters of student-athletes and our programs. In 2007, the athletic department named its golf tournament after Gretchen to thank her for her years of service to Chemeketa.
The tournament format will continue to be a four person team scramble.
“After many conversations with our participants and discussions with our new tournament committee, we decided to make a few adjustments that will help add to the tournaments fun and success,” said Cassie Belmodis Chemeketa Athletic Director.
The first of these changes is moving the date to June 18.
“As a group we felt that having a date closer to the end of the school year may allow us to reach out to attract our Chemeketa community that we have missed by holding the tournament later in the summer,” said Belmodis. “The other contributing factor is putting a little separation between our tournament and the Rick Adelman Classic which is hosted by the Chemeketa Foundation.” added Belmodis. “It is our hope that people don’t feel like they have to choose between two great opportunities to support Chemeketa athletics.”
Other changes include returning to an 8:30 am start time and having carts included in the cost of participation.
There are many opportunities for those who are interested in sup-porting Chemeketa Athletics through sponsorships as well. For more information please contact Cassie Belmodis at Chemeketa, 503.399.5159 or cassie.belmodis@chemeketa.edu. To reserve a spot for your team please contact David Abderhalden, 503.399.2554 or david.abderhalden@chemeketa.edu.
