CHEMEKETA COACH NAMED NFCA COACH OF THE YEAR

The National Fastpitch Coaches Association has named as its coach of the year Cassie Belmodis, coordinator of Chemeketa Community College‚s Trio Talent Search program and head coach of the women‚s softball team.ž Also honored at the association‚s national convention on Nov. 30 in Scottsdale, Ariz., were the team‚s assistant coaches, Jill Rutter, who played on the team during its first season; Ed Dodson, member of Chemeketa‚s board of education; and Susan Sasano, who is employed at Silverton High School.

The Chemeketa coaches were also named the 2001 Speedline/NFCA Northwest Athletic Association of Community College Coaching Staff of the Year.ž ž

Belmodis helped start the women‚s softball program at Chemeketa two years ago. She and her staff guided the team to a 33-11 season record in what was just the program‚s second year. The Storm posted a league record of 24-8 in the competitive South Division.

Belmodis has worked in several capacities at Chemeketa over the past 17 years and, prior to taking on the job as Chemeketa‚s head women‚s softball coach, she coached at North Salem High School for 13 years.
