Cascade Steel Rolling Mills Invests in Next Generation Workforce.

Salem, Ore., September 10, 2009

Chemeketa Community College is thrilled to accept a recent scholarship donation from Cascade Steel Rolling Mills, of McMinnville, Ore. The scholarship will be available for the fall 2009 academic school year and open to students pursuing training in technical trades such as welding, pre-engineering drafting, machining, or metals fabrication. Scholarship funds will help defray the costs of tuition, books and other fees.

Recipients must be residents of Yamhill County and present a financial need. Four $2,000 scholarships will be made available. This scholarship fund was initially established because of Cascade Steels generosity and matched by a gift from the James and Marion Miller Foundation, of Portland.

“Its part of a larger goal,” says Cascade Steel spokesman Jon Ostling.  “We need to bolster the manufacturing industry at the college and high school level and let students know that opportunities exist in the manufacturing industry.”

Senior U.S. economist for Capital Economics Ltd, Paul Ashworthfour reported “Signs of a turnaround in manufacturing,” to the Associated Press on August 20, 2009. And, according to the Federal Reserve Bank of Philadelphia, the manufacturing activity in the mid-Atlantic region climbed this month into positive territory, reaching its highest level since the recession began in late 2007.

Chemeketa’s foundation director, Don Russo said, “Cascade Steel is showing their leadership through this generous gift. They know that students can earn their way into a good career if they pursue the education and training needed to gain entry to the technical trades. Chemeketa is a strong partner in helping students prepare for the world of work.”
