Theatre: Candida by George Bernard Shaw. Salem Repertory Theatre. One of the world's great plays recounts the soulful love sickness of 18 year old Marchbanks for Candida, the parson's wife. The parson is at first amused, then incensed and finally angered. In typical Shaw fashion there is a recognition and reversal at the end, when it is the mooning poet who turns out to be the stronger suitor, and the self confident pastor, the weaker. Through it all there is Candida, one of Shaw's greatest insights into womankind; the ineffectual curate, the secretary with a crush on her boss, and the father in law who is positively the original bourgeois mercenary.
