Montgomery G.I. Bill - Selected Reserve (Chapter 1606)

This is the educational benefit program for active members of the Selected Reserve. Selected Reserve components include the –

  • Army Reserve
  • Naval Reserve
  • Air Force Reserve
  • Marine Corps Reserve
  • Coast Guard Reserve
  • Army National Guard
  • Air National Guard

The Department of Defense and the Department of Homeland Security (Coast Guard) determine who is eligible for chapter 1606. The Department of Veterans Affairs administers the program and pays benefits. Basic eligibility requires a 6-year obligation to serve in the Selected Reserve and satisfactory participation in required Selected Reserve training. As of October 1st, 2015, the basic full-time (12 more credits) monthly benefit is $368.00 for a maximum of 36 months or the equivalent in part-time training.

Individuals making an initial application for this benefit may complete an on-line application using the VA's Veteran's On-Line Application System (VONAPP) or by completing and submitting an Application for VA Educational Benefits (VA Form 22-1990) to Chemeketa Veterans' Services. Students who have used this benefit at another school or wish to change their degree or program should complete and submit a Request for Change of Program or Place of Training (VA Form 22-1995) to Chemeketa Veterans' Services. To expedite processing and approval by VA, students making an initial application should include a copy of their Notice of Basic Eligibility/DD Form 2384.

1606 Kickers: An additional amount, called a kicker, may be added to the benefit of some chapter 1606 students. The possible monthly kicker levels are $200 & $350. A chapter 1606 kicker may be a part of the original enlistment contract or part of a re-enlistment contract.
