Credit Hour Requirements For The Post 9/11 GI Bill

While students receiving benefits under the Post 9/11 GI Bill (Chapter 33) will have some or all of their tuition & fees paid by the VA regardless of the number of credits taken, the VA will only pay the living stipend if the student's rate of pursuit is 51% or greater.  The VA calculates the rate of pursuit by dividing the number of credit hours being pursued by the number of credits considered to be full-time for the term.  As as example, if the term is 10 to 13 weeks in length, 12 credits is considered full time.  If the term is 8 weeks in length, 8 credits is considered full time. As an example:

Term Length of 10 - 13 weeks:
6 credits is 50% (6 divided by 12 = 50%) - Student does not receive the living stipend
7 credits is 58% (7 divided by 12 = 58%) - Student receives the living stipend

Term Length of 8 weeks:
4 credits is 50% (4 divided by 8 = 50%) - Student does not receive the living stipend
5 credits is 62.5% (5 divided by 8 = 62.5%) - Student does receives the living stipend

Summer Term

There are different credit hour requirements for VA benefits for summer term because the length of the term is usually fewer weeks than fall, winter and spring. If all courses taken by the student are the full eight weeks of summer term, the VA will pay benefits at the full-time rate for eight credits. The VA always makes the final decision on what rate to pay based on the dates of each course provided by the college. For this reason summer term benefits will not be certified to the VA until students have registered for their classes and confirmed course dates, credits and applicability to program with the Chemeketa Community College Veterans' Services Office.
