Tuition Waivers

Tuition Waivers for Disabled Oregon Veterans & Dependents of Oregon Fallen Service Personnel

In recognition of the service and sacrifices of military service veterans and their families, Chemeketa provides the following tuition waivers —

Disabled Oregon Veterans

Tuition waiver application

The college shall waive tuition (not covered by any other agency or government sponsored program) of veterans who are identified as totally & permanently disabled (100 percent) as a result of military service and who are residents of Oregon at the time of application for the waiver.

The purpose of this waiver is to allow an Oregon veteran the opportunity to earn his or her first associate's degree. Therefore, the waiver is offered for up to two years of full-time attendance or a degree (which ever comes first). The waiver does not cover books, fees or other expenses.

Adequate documentation must be attached to the application and should include the following:

  • Proof of the Veteran's military service (DD Form 214)
  • Documentation of the Veteran's service connected disability rating as determined by the U.S. Department of Veterans' Affairs.

You only need to submit a waiver for your first term.  The college will track registration and waive tuition during subsequent terms.

Since your financial aid award may be reduced by the use of this waiver, your initial request must be submitted to the Chemeketa Veterans' Services Office no later than the week prior to each term's start date.

Oregon Dependents of Fallen or Disabled Service Personnel

Tuition waiver application

The college will provide a tuition waiver to the spouse and children, age 23 and under (including adoptive and step-children), of members of all branches of the U.S. Armed Forces and Coast Guard who:

  • died while on active duty, or
  • died as a result of a 100% service connected disability, or
  • is rated as 100% disabled by the U.S Department of Veterans' Affairs, or
  • died as a result of a service connected disability certified as less than 100%

The student must be a resident of Oregon when the application for a waiver is submitted.  The spouse must initiate the waiver request within ten years of a formal determination of a 100% service connected disability or death of the service member and they will lose eligibility for the waiver upon remarriage. Children must initiate the waiver request prior to age 23.

Once eligibility has been established, the college will apply the waiver either on a first dollar or last dollar basis based on the following criteria:

Tuition waivers will be applied as "first dollar" (e.g. without considering other resources) when the military member died while on active duty or as a result of a 100% service-connected disability as certified by the U.S. Department of Veterans' Affairs. Eligible students will receive a first dollar tuition waiver as long as they do not receive the Marine Gunnery Sergeant John D. Fry Scholarship.

All other eligible students shall be granted a waiver as "last dollar" in coordination with other student financial assistance, including GI Bill benefits for which the recipient may be eligible, utilizing other grant resources before applying the waiver in order to provide a benefit that does not exceed the total estimated cost of attendance.

The tuition waiver is available to students admitted to a certificate or degree program only. The waiver is limited to two years of full time attendance or the completion of an associates degree, whichever comes first. The waiver does not cover books, fees or other expenses.

Adequate documentation must be attached to the application and should include the following:

  • Veteran’s cost of attendance (if applicable)
  • Proof of the Veteran's military service (DD Form 214)
  • Proof of the applicant's dependant status (DD Form 93, marriage or birth certificate)
