Placement testing

All new students seeking a certificate or degree from Chemeketa are required to take the placement test. We offer tests administered on computers or on paper –

  • COMPASS is the computer-based placement test
  • ASSET is a paper/pencil version of the placement test. It is an alternative to the computerized test
  • Students with documented disabilities can request accommodations for taking the Placement Test. For eligibility and scheduling, please contact the Office of Disability Services at 503.399.5192 or e-mail

Steps to taking the Placement Test-

(For new students attending Chemeketa for the first time)

  • Apply for admission to Chemeketa (processing time is 2-3 business days)
  • View the online New Student Orientation in My Chemeketa
  • Prepare for the Placement Test
  • Come into one of our Testing Centers with your photo ID and your Chemeketa ID number (K#) to start your assessment

(For students attending other institutions and for apprenticeships)

  • Prepare for the Placement Test
  • Come into one of our Testing Centers with your photo ID and a 25 dollar proctoring fee, payable by either exact cash or by check
  • Inform the proctor whether you are taking this for an apprenticeship program or for another school
  • Start your Placement Test

Salem campus testing

No appointment necessary. Tests are available on a walk-in basis year-round (except holidays and college closure days) Mon.–Thurs. in Bldg. 3, Rm. 268 (Salem campus).


  • Monday,Wednesday & Thursday, 10 am-5 pm (must begin test before 3 pm)
  • Tuesday 10 am-8 pm (must begin test before 6 pm)

Yamhill Valley campus testing
