Placement Testing

Chemeketa requires placement testing for most new certificate- or degree-seeking students. This includes students taking credit classes for personal enrichment. Without placement test scores or previous college credit, it is difficult to estimate your potential for success in classes that require a minimum level of reading, writing or math skills. You can’t fail a placement testing, but it pays to prepare in advance and do your best.

You might be exempt from the placement test if you can provide transcripts or scores for-

  • Smarter Balanced Math and English Language Arts tests taken in 11th grade
  • College credit from Chemeketa or another college
  • Previous placement scores less than 5 years old (COMPASS, ASSET or Accuplacer)
  • AP, IB or CLEP credit
  • College Credit Now

Chemeketa Scholars applicants are always required to take the placement test as one of the scholarship application requirements.

If English is not your first language our placement test advisor may recommend assessment by Chemeketa’s English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESL) program. Students who need special accommodations should contact Disability Services.

About the Test

  • A photo ID is required every time you test
  • Chemeketa uses the Accuplacer to assess current skill levels in reading, writing and math
  • It takes 1 1/2 to 2 hours to complete all three tests
  • Many students find they test better by taking a break in between; it is possible to take the reading/writing and math tests on different days or different times
  • There is no charge the first time students test
  • A re-test in the same calendar year costs $15 (cash or check only)
  • Students of other colleges or community members taking the test for employment are welcome to test for a fee of $25 (cash or check only)

After the Placement Test

An advisor will help you understand the placement test scores and their impact on your educational plan. Sometimes re-testing is recommended, or your advisor may suggest an alternative placement test for greater success in raising your scores. Starting Chemeketa classes at the appropriate course level will lead to a greater likelihood of your success.
