Scholarship Guidelines & Tips
Steps I through VI of the application are required for each and all scholarships no exceptions. Some scholarships have attachments that require more information; other attachments are simply check-off sheets to assist you.
The more complete the application, the better. Items left blank on the steps leave the application open to interpretation, and that may not always be good.
List scholarships at the bottom of page 2 that you are applying for from the included insert or this web site only. Read the criteria for the scholarship and make sure you are eligible.
Be sure your budget on page 3 is realistic and complete. Showing all bills without resources is very unrealistic and becomes questionable. Check the amounts you have listed for accuracy, too. The committees scrutinize the budget portion for what is reasonable. List any special financial circumstances the committee should be aware of.
Do not include your financial aid package in your resources and do not list tuition, fees and books as expenses on page 3. The Financial Aid office will add this information.
Make sure that you complete any attachments that are required for different scholarships, and that includes page 4 of the application for all scholarships. Any one required item left out will render your scholarship incomplete, and you will not be considered for a scholarship. If you have questions regarding requirements, please call 503.399.6990 or visit Otilia at Bldg. 2, Rm. 217.
Sign and date the application at the bottom of page 4. Unsigned applications are not considered.
Write your essay with the thought in mind that you are addressing a group of people who know nothing about you, and you are trying to convince them that you deserve a scholarship. Be truthful, to the point, and make sure the essay is legible. One or two pages are preferred. A second page has been provided for you to list any activities, honors or awards you have recieved.
Letters of reference should be directed toward scholarship selection committees on educational and career goals, not as if you are seeking employment. Attach a business card with this form. Your chances of receiving a scholarship are reduced if this form is not signed.
Make sure that you have turned in your application and ALL attachments by the deadline. Many committees treat this application process the same as an employment application, and late applications are not considered under any circumstance.
Feel free to visit Otilia Morales in the Foundation Office in Bldg. 2, Rm. 217 if you have specific questions regarding this application or any of the requirements. Or you may contact Otilia by phone at 503.399.6990 or by e-mail.
