Why study accounting?
The field of accounting is exciting.
The information gathered and used by accountants is vital to an organization. Because technology has improved information gathering, the emphasis in accounting is using the information to improve organizational performance. Accounting records and tracks what happens in the entire organization.
Organizations cannot survive without accounting.
Accounting is not only the language of business, but it is critical to all organizations. It is a system by which organizations communicate information to managers and other employees within the organization. Accounting provides critical information for corporations and their stockholders, government agencies, and financial instituions. Even if you do not become an accountant, the knowledge of accounting is valuable for managers, small business owners, farmers, lawyers, doctors, and other self-employed professionals.
The demand for college-educated accountants is currently greater than the supply.
The State of Oregon anticipates large vacancies because of upcoming retirements. Certified public accounting firms are increasing staff to keep up with the growth of business and individual accounting needs in the region. Industry is also expanding in the Chemeketa Community College district. Each industry needs an accounting staff.
Accountants have a knowledge base that will not be replaced by technology.
The complexity of income tax laws, generally accepted accounting procedures, wage and hour laws, and Security and Exchange Commission requirements makes accounting an important profession now and in the future.
