What training is available?
Associate of Applied Science in Accounting
This program is listed under Accounting in the Chemeketa Community College Catalog. The program is designed for students who wish in-depth training in accounting and business and it can be completed in two or more years. If you are seeking a bachelors degree in accounting, we recommend you obtain an Associate of Arts Oregon Transfer Degree. If you are not sure which degree you want, you may wish to consult with an advisor to select as many courses as you can which will apply toward both degrees. Most of the courses in the Associate of Applied Science in Accounting degree transfer, but they may transfer as electives.
Associate of Arts Oregon Transfer Degree
This program is listed under Business Administration in the Chemeketa Community College Catalog. You will need a bachelors degree if you wish to become a C.P.A. If you plan to transfer out of state or to a private college, you need to work with the college or university to determine what courses will be accepted toward their degree requirements.
Tax Preparer Courses
Planning to become a licensed tax preparer? You'll first need to complete an 80-hour course approved by the Oregon Board of Tax Practitioners. You can receive your education with on-campus, in-class instruction or through the convenience of an online course.
Some classes are available online
You can obtain the AAS in Accounting and the Associate of Arts Oregon Transfer Degree or selected classes in a variety of ways. Besides the traditional classroom setting, you can obtain part of your degree online. We currently offer five accounting classes and other business, math, and writing classes online. Classes are also offered through cable television or through interactive television offered at the Santiam, McMinnville, Dallas, Grand Ronde, or Woodburn Centers. You can also take classes part-time and only take one or two classes in the day or evening.
Skills you will acquire in the accounting program include the abilities to:
- Complete the accounting cycle for a small business, both manually and using a current accounting software package. Analyze the work and make corrections. Recognize and communicate irregularities needing management attention.
- Complete the accounting cycle for a large business with assistance from a senior accountant.
- Use communications skills, including reading, writing, listening, and speaking skills, to work individually and as a team member.
- Read and analyze financial reports and trends. Use technology to compose instructions and correspondence of a technical nature.
- Identify the functions within a business and how each function interrelates to carry out the objectives of an organization.
- Analyze the ethical and legal standards of the profession when choosing a course of action in accounting.
- Prepare federal and state documents and reports related to accounting in a timely and accurate manner.
