The Community Agriculture and Pesticide Training program includes many of the re-certification requirements for pesticide applicators. In addition, the program responds to other important issues facing the agricultural community throughout Oregon. Classes offered include:

Private Applicator License Training

Emphasizes pesticide laws and regulations. Stresses pesticide labeling. Includes information on application equipment, pesticide safety, pests and pest control. Demonstrates appropriate calculations. All in preparation for taking Oregon's Private Applicators Licensing examination. Eight pesticide recertification hours available.

Pesticide Applicator Training in Spanish

Emphasizes pesticide laws and regulations. Stresses pesticide labeling. Demonstrates appropriate calculations. Includes information on pesticide exposure risk, personal protective equipment, safe pesticide handling procedures, application equipment calibration and maintenance, accident prevention, and pesticide spill management. Covers signs and symptoms of pesticide poisoning and first aid procedures. Six pesticide recertification hours available.

Weed Identification and Management

Introduces weed plants. Explores herbicide chemistry. Covers herbicide selection. Four pesticide recertification hours available.

Integrated Pest Management (IPM) Basics

Presents information on the main elements of integrated pest management (IPM) and surveys the pest management approaches and methods that can be employed as part of an IPM system. Discusses the economic and environmental benefits of IPM and cover examples of a variety of IPM plans. Six pesticide recertification hours available.

Sprayer Calibration

Emphasizes the importance of accurate calibration. Identifies types of application equipment and their components. Presents calibration principles. Reviews appropriate calculations. Four pesticide recertification hours available.

Label Comprehension

Presents a comprehensive analysis of the information contained within a pesticide product label. Covers the types of product registrations processed by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and state agencies. Reviews product label information required by the Federal Insecticide, Fungicide & Rodenticide Act. Includes interpretation of manufacturer-supplied information related to a label. Four pesticide recertification hours available. Approved by the Oregon Landscape Contractors Board for four CEH.

Plant Disease Management

Surveys plant disease categories. Presents plant disease life cycles and covers fungicide application timing and selection of appropriate fungicides. Four pesticide recertification hours available.

Worker Protection Standard

Presents specific information related to EPA's Worker Protection Standard (WPS) and its implementation in Oregon. Covers the elements of this regulation in addition to other related state and federal regulations regarding pesticide worker safety. Meets the training requirement portion of the small farm exemption under OAR 437.001.0057. Four pesticide recertification hours available.

Respiratory Protection for Agriculture Operations

Presents respiratory protection for agricultural operations in Oregon and necessary elements such as hazard recognition, respiratory selection and care and maintenance of respirators. Oregon OSHA's Respiratory Protection Standard for Agriculture will be covered. Four pesticide recertification hours available.

Laws and Safety and Trainee Review

Reviews federal and state pesticide laws and the government agencies related to pesticide regulation and safe pesticide use. Helps prepare to take the Oregon Department of Agriculture pesticide certification exams in the law and safety and directly supervised trainee categories. Eight pesticide recertification hours available. Approved by the Oregon Landscape Contractors Board for eight CEH.

Ornamental and Turf: Herbicide Training

Surveys the use of herbicides in the establishment and maintenance of ornamental plants and turf.  Helps prepare the student to take Oregon’s pesticide licensing examination in the Ornamental and Turf: Herbicide category.  Eight pesticide recertification hours availableApproved by the Oregon Landscape Contractors Board for eight CEH.

Ornamental and Turf: Insecticide and Fungicide Training

Surveys the use of insecticides and fungicides in the establishment and maintenance of ornamental plants and turf.  Helps prepare the student to take Oregon’s pesticide licensing examination in the Ornamental and Turf: Insecticide and Fungicide category. Eight pesticide recertification hours availableApproved by the Oregon Landscape Contractors Board for eight CEH.

Pesticide Right-of-Way Training

This review session is designed to present information about weed biology, identification and control practices; herbicide basics; pesticide application; right-of-way chemicals; and laws and liability in preparation for taking Oregon's Right-of-Way and Regulatory Weed Control licensing exams. No pesticide recertification hours available.

Structural Pest Control

Surveys structural pest control in preparation to take the Oregon Department of Agriculture Industrial Institutional, Health, and Structural: Structural Pest Control examination. Twelve pesticide recertification hours available.

General Urban Pest Control

A survey of general urban pest control for preparation to pass the Oregon Department of Agriculture Industrial, Institutional, Health, and Structural: General Pest Control Examination. Fourteen pesticide recertification hours available..

Wood Destroying Organism Inspection and Evaluation

Examines the biology, environment, and habits of wood-destroying organisms in the Pacific Northwest that commonly cause economic harm to wood structures, such as termits, carpenter ants, wood boring beetles, wood-destroying fungi and other structual damaging pest of wood structures. Focuses on providing the state-licensed commercial pesticide applicator, operator or certified home inspector with advanced knowledge of wood destroying organisms and the means to communicate to interested parties the risks inherent with structural infestation as well as findings and solutions of an inspection. Six pesticide recertification hours available.

Forestry Pesticide Review

Surveys forest pesticide use in Oregon. Emphasizes pesticide laws and regulations.  Reviews the Oregon Forest Practices Act concerning chemical and other petroleum products.  Covers the fundamentals of forest pesticides, including common herbicide formulations; application and handling; labeling; safety; pest control methods, including Integrated Pest Management (IPM); and calculations and calibrations.  Helps prepare you to take the forestry category examination of the Oregon Department of Agriculture Public and/or Commercial Applicators License.  Eight pesticide recertification hours available.

Forestry Vegetation Management

Emphasizes the fundamentals of forest pesticides, including common herbicide formulations; timing of herbicide applications; and the use of herbicices in riparian areas. Focuses on current surfactant technology and commonly used products. Reviews characteristics of pesticides and pest control methods. Four pesticide recertification hours available.
