Job Description

Plumbers assemble, install and repair pipes, fittings, medical gas systems and fixtures of heating, water and drainage systems, such as sinks, toilets, bathtubs, water heaters, hot water tanks, garbage disposal units and dishwashers according to specifications and plumbing codes.


  • High School Diploma or GED
  • At least 18 years of age
  • Must have one of the following:
    • One year of high school algebra or integrated math 2 with a C or better
    • A college algebra course that meets or exceeds high school algebra with a C or better
    • A college math placement test with placement into Math 60 or higher

Working Conditions

Plumbing work is done indoors and outdoors, in existing and newly constructed buildings, in all kinds of weather, and around noise, dirt and mud. Plumbers often work cramped areas and in awkward positions. Apprentices complete a minimum of 7700 hours of on-the-job training to qualify as a plumber.

Related Training

Classroom instruction is 2 evenings a week combined with on-the-job training to provide the most comprehensive course of study for an apprentice in the plumbing trade.
