Art History
Visual literacy is important whether you are a studio major, a general studies transfer student, or simply looking for more knowledge about art and creativity. These classes explore the way humans have visually made sense of and influenced their world through the ages. The Art Program offers Understanding Art, a class for absolute beginners in art, and also a series of art history classes. These in-depth classes explore art from the Paleolithic cave paintings of Lascaux to the Twenty-first Century. They can be taken singly or in any order.
What do you say when you at a work of art? “I like it” or “I hate it”? If you want to say more but don’t know how, Understanding Art is for you. This is a class for absolute beginners in art.
You will make and critique your own work of art, and study how famous artists do the same. You will learn how a work of art makes you happy or sad. By the end of one quarter, you will look at works of art in an entirely new way, and be able to talk about them with ease.

ART204 Introduction to Art History
Covers the beginnings of art, from the Cave to the first Church. The Greeks, the Egyptians, the Mesopotamians: they are all there, plus much, much more.

Covers the Medieval and Early Renaissance periods. Gothic Cathedrals and Italian painting make for a glorious tour through the Arts of Europe.
