Purpose of the Chemeketa Child Development Laboratory School

The Chemeketa Child Development Center is operated as a college laboratory school as part of the Early Childhood Education program.  College students enrolled in our program are part of a comprehensive program of both theory and practical experiences designed to prepare them to work with young children.  College students participate in four terms of practicum experience at the Child Development Center.  The college course catalog describes these practicums as follows:

ECE 162: Early Childhood Educator Orientation, 3 lab hours, 1 hour of seminar weekly.

Roles and responsibilities of the early childhood educator.  Experience in working with young children in an organized setting and assisting with supervision of the various daily activities in a preschool program.

ECE 163: Preschool Practicum, 9 lab hours, 1 hour of seminar weekly.

Experience working with young children in a laboratory preschool setting.  Students will assist with supervision of the various activities in a preschool program.  Includes some planning, executing, and evaluation of curriculum materials appropriate for the young child.

ECE 261: Student Teaching I, Early Childhood Education, 12 lab hours, 1.5 hours of seminar weekly.

Supervised teaching of young children in a laboratory setting.

ECE 262: Student Teaching II, Early Childhood Education, 12 lab hours, 1.5 hours of seminar weekly.

Supervised teaching of young children in a preschool laboratory.
