Frequently asked questions
Does Chemeketa Community College issue me a teaching license?
No. The Education Programs at Chemeketa are a first step towards teacher licensure. Students must complete additional requirements at the university level for standard teacher certification, or meet requirements specified by a school district Instructor Appraisal Committee for Professional-Technical certification.
What if I already have a bachelor's degree?
In most cases, if you have a bachelor's degree, the fastest route to teacher certification is through a graduate level program at a university. Chemeketa's Education faculty can help to advise you about university programs in this area.
I have volunteered or worked in schools before. Will my experience count towards my certificate?
When you meet with a faculty advisor in the Education Programs we will review your previous experience working in schools. If you are currently employed in a school we may be able to use that as your practicum site for satisfying practicum requirements.
My teaching license has expired. Will the Education coursework at Chemeketa Community College qualify towards recertification?
Yes. The Oregon Teacher Standards and Practice Commission accepts all education classes at Chemeketa for purposes of recertification.
I don't live in the Salem area. Are these programs available in a distance delivery format?
Most of the education courses are now offered in a distance delivery format. Check the current Schedule of Classes for online and distance delivery options or contact one of the program faculty for more information.
What if I work full-time during the day? Do you offer classes in the evenings?
Yes.
Is financial aid available to help with the costs of this program?
Yes. Contact the Financial Aid office for more information. 503.399.5018.
