What Is Emeritus?

The Emeritus Association's mission is to help retirees continue to be a part of the Chemeketa community. The association provides ways for former employees to stay connected through participation in social and cultural activities and classes and by providing opportunities to support the work of the college. Past projects have included organizing a Chemeketa history booklet, holding a garage sale, and working on "Into the Streets," a day-long volunteer project.

Who can join?

If you are a Chemeketa retiree, you are invited to join. To remain an active member, you simply pay modest dues each year. Friends and/or supporters of the college may also join the group as participating members, on approval by the membership.

Who runs the Emeritus Association?

The members do! They decide what they want the organization to be and how much they want to be involved. Members elect a board to oversee the group's activities, and Chemeketa Community College provides a liaison from the College Advancement Office to help maintain the relationship between the college and the association and provide logistical support.

What are the benefits?

As an Emeritus member, you receive invitations to social and other activities. Among these are the following:

  • Member lunches
The Emeritus Association holds at least two member lunches each year (spring and fall). These lunches include a short, informational program and meeting. Usually the college president or other administrative member joins the group and gives a brief update on the college. The lunches are an enjoyable way to catch up with your fellow retirees.
  • Volunteer opportunities
Some Emeritus members continue to serve the college by volunteering their time for activities like tutoring second-language students or organizing a group for "Into the Street." Many opportunities to volunteer are available.
  • College events
Emeritus members receive invitations to major college events, such as the president's message during fall In-service, the all-staff Holiday Social, the annual employee retirement recognition, and the celebration honoring 10, 20 and 30 year employees.

If you have retired from Chemeketa under PERS with at least five years of Chemeketa employment, and if you are a paid Emeritus member, you also qualify for the following benefits:

  • Tuition waiver
The waiver allows Chemeketa retirees to take three credits per term without charge. (Fees must still be paid.) This can be used for all classes (including self-support) as long as it does not displace paying students.
