Learning Communities

Chemeketa's Learning Communities offer students an exciting opportunity to experience in-depth learning in a close knit peer group.

What is a Learning Community?

A cluster of two or three classes linked by content or theme all of which are attended by the same group of students.

What are the benefits of a Learning Community?

  • In-depth coverage of subject matter
  • Increased faculty support and interaction
  • Increased peer support and interaction
  • Shared or coordinated assignments
  • Additional skill support
  • Opportunities to make friends

How do I register for a Learning Community?

Learning Community courses must be registered for together, so please be sure to enter all CRN's at the same time in My Chemeketa registration. If you have problems registering, contact the Counseling Center or any of the instructors.

What Learning Communities are available Winter Term?

  1. Thinking Like a College Student: Reading and Writing in a College Culture
  2. Reading and Writing Learning Community - Get a 2 for 1 Deal!

    • Introduction to Composition WR115 (CRN 52432)
    • College Textbook Reading RD090 (CRN ?????)
    • Instructors: Kelly Peterson and Teresa Massey
      (You must register for both CRNS)

    In this exciting and supportive learning community, take advantage of an opportunity to improve your reading and writing abilities, two closely related skills, while receiving full credit for both courses. Taking Reading 090 and Writing 115 as a learning community will help you to gain academic success in the college environment and in the larger world.

  3. The Machine and the Mind: The Influence of Technology

    • CS101 Introduction to Microcomputer Applications (CRN 55869) MWF 12:30 - 1:20p.m.
    • WR121 College Composition (CRN 55868) MWF 1:30 - 2:20 p.m.

    In this thought-provoking Learning Community, you'll learn new ways to use technology and also the ways technology uses you. Through reading and writing a variety of texts as well as learning important computer applications, you'll see how technology has changed and continues to change our lives. You will learn computer techniques that will make you more efficient in both doing research for your papers as well as composing your papers with a word processor. Taking WR121 and CS101 together will help you become successful writers and show you how to get the most out of our available technology.

  4. Racism, Violence, Murder and Mayhem? Exploring Social Issues through Writing and Drama

    Are you interested in social issues? Do you like discussing them? Are you interested in reading about Racial Strife? Marital Discord? Crossing Borders? Miracles? Gender Bending? Historical Intrigue? Political Scandals? Adventure? War? Travel? Class Conflict? Endurance? Come join us for a fun and interactive Learning Community that combines Argumentative Writing and Dramatic Literature. We will be exploring timeless social conflicts through reading and writing, as you develop critical thinking and reading skills in a supportive environment. Discover issues of race, class, gender, family relationships, and betrayal that have endured, and what we can do about them today.

  5. Fear Factor "101": Learning to Enjoy Mathematics and Public Speaking

    • MTH095 Intermediate Algebra (51513) MUWF 9:30 - 10:20 a.m.
    • SP111 Fundamentals of Public Speaking (55863) 10:30 - 11:20 a.m.

    If there's one thing people fear more than math or death, it's giving a speech. So why not conquer your fears or better yet come have a great time in this supportive and fun Learning Community that combines SP 111, Introduction to Public Speaking and MTH 95, Intermediate Algebra. We will explore the study of functions in math and the basic elements of public speaking. Together we will discover ways to evaluate more than equations. You will learn to manage your nerves before giving a speech, effective techniques for conducing and evaluating research while also learning to graph and solve various types of equations, preparing yourself for higher math classes. As you learn to write and deliver speeches you will also learn to understand and appreciate math in a context beyond the classroom as together we explore history, culture, business and the future.
