MUP100 Individual Lessons
Covers pedagogy of the instrument being studied, including fundamentals of music, reading and theory, beneficial practice habits, repertoire for the instrument, interpretation, and performance techniques. Course may be repeated for a maximum of nine credits per instrument. F, W, Sp, Su

Offers applied study and performance on musical instruments played in ensemble or solo formats. Prerequisite: Two years instruction on an instrument or an audition. Offered as needed.

Offers singing in a choral ensemble, in a mixed voice (soprano, alto, tenor, bass) chorus. Includes proper singing habits, basic musical terms and expressions, rehearsal techniques procedures, and exposure to a wide variety of music literature, culminating in a final performance. Course may be repeated for a maximum of 8 credits. Prerequisite: Consent of instructor and previous experience singing with a school, civic or church choir is helpful but not mandatory. F, W, Sp

MUS199B History of Latino Music in US
Traces the background of various regional Latin music that crossed borders to the United States. Discusses the different styles, importance, effects and acceptance of this music from the 19th century to today. Includes the conventions and techniques of: Tejano - music of the Tex-Mexicans; Mariachi - music brought from Mexico for weddings, quinceneras and parties; Chicano - East L.A. sound; and Salsa - brought from Puerto Rico to New York and beyond. Focuses on the music of the 17th and 18th Centuries, including early vocal music, the origins of opera and sacred music, and the early instrumental forms of music that led to the classical symphony of Hayden, Mozart, and Beethoven. F

Focuses on Western European music practices, music fundamentals, music analysis, basic sight-singing, and listening. Covers intervals, scales, modes, circle of fifths, triads, seventh chords, figured bass, basic four-part writing, and more. Emphasizes terminology and music concepts from the Renaissance to the present day. Prerequistie: Students must be able to read music in the treble and bass clefs. F
