Introduction to Horticulture

Explore the world of horticulture in this introduction to one of Oregon’s most important industries.  Acquire an understanding of the basics of plant growth, function and identification.  Discover how soil, fertilizer and pests affect growing crops.  Study the environmental, economic and social aspects of horticulture.  Includes hands-on experience working with plants in Chemeketa’s greenhouses.  Accepted by OSU as a transfer course for HORT 111.  Serves as a Science/Applied Science requirement for a Chemeketa Associate of Applied Science degree.  Gail Gredler, instructor.  Four credits.  1-4 p.m., Mondays and 1:30-3:30 p.m., Wednesdays.  Building 61, Room. 102.  $244 plus $52 fee.

Greenhouse Structures and Equipment

Covers structural and mechanical aspects of the greenhouse environment.  Considers different styles of greenhouses.  Compares greenhouse systems with regard to frames, covers, benches, mechanical controls, and general level of technology.  Examines temperature control, lighting, irrigation, and fertilization systems in the greenhouse.  Two credits.  6-8 p.m., Mondays. Horticulture Practicum

Applies nursery and greenhouse production techniques in the greenhouse and nursery.  Focuses on practical skills used in greenhouses and container and field production nurseries.  Includes plant propagation, transplanting, water, fertilizer and pest management, and growth regulation.  Provides skills and experience in retail nursery management.  Three credits.  Prerequsites: HOR111 and HOR211 or consent of instructor.  Contact Gail Gredler, 503.365.4692, for days, times and location of class. $183 plus $19.50 fee.

Identification of Woody Plants 1
HOR226 (CRN 36905-lecture and CRN 36993-lab, register for both)
Identifies species and varieties of woody landscape plants that exhibit seasonal highlights of fruit and fall color.  Stresses scientific naming of plants. Integrated Pest Management: Insects

Presents an integrated approach to insect and mite management in the nursery and greenhouse. Covers identification of common insect and mite pests and their natural enemies, insect monitoring, and assessment.  Focuses on cultural practices and biological control techniques to manage insect and mite problems.  Includes use of insecticides and miticides to manage pest populations. Urban Applications in Ecological Horticulture

Wood Destroying Organism Inspection and Evaluation

Registration Information

Students can register on the web at http://my.chemeketa.edu/ and have 10 working days after registration to make financial arrangements for payment of their tuition or they will be charged a $25 fee. Additional $25 late fees will be applied for accounts 30 days or more over due at the 6th and 10th weeks of each term. Maximum late fees of $75 per term will be charged. Courses will not be dropped for non-payment of classes.

If you have not attended a class at Chemeketa within the last year, you will not be able to use either of the automated systems to register. Instead:
