Horticulture Courses

Plant Propagation
HOR211 (CRN 52837-lecture, CRN 52839-lab, register for both)

Discover the art and science of plant propagation with hands-on techniques using seeds, cuttings, division, layering and grafting in Chemeketa ’s greenhouses.  Explore techniques of tissue culture of plants.  Gain knowledge and experience with the equipment, materials and environmental conditions used in commercial propagation and visit the propagation facilities at several area nurseries. Three credits.

Greenhouse Production & Management
HOR223 (CRN 58479)

Focuses on management practices in production greenhouses.  Covers irrigation and fertilization practices, light and temperature to achieve desired plant growth.  Emphasizes growth regulation, production scheduling and examines the wholesale and retail nursery industry in Oregon.  Three credits.

Identification of Woody Plants II
HOR227 (CRN 57174-lecture and CRN 57175-lab, register for both)

Learn to identify species and varieties of landscape trees and shrubs, focusing on conifers and broadleaf evergreens with ornamental value. Plant identification techniques that rely on recognition of form, structure and visual details of leaves, needles, cones, fruit and bark will be used. Labs include identification of trees and shrubs at local nurseries, The Oregon Garden, Chemeketa campus, and other area locations with a diversity of plant material.  (Identification of Woody Plants I, II, and III can be taken independently or in any sequence.)  Three credits. 

NEW! Native Plant Propagation and Use
HOR270 (CRN 58687)

Explores use of native plants for landscaping, habitat restoration and development, and environmental services. Examines native plant use in both natural and constructed environments. A variety of propagation techniques commonly used with native plants will be presented. Current and future markets for Oregon native plants will be analyzed.  Two credits.

Forest Management Transfer Courses

Forest Surveying 1
FT210A (CRN 50027-lecture, CRN 50030-lab, register for both)

Covers basic forest surveying techniques including fundamentals of horizontal and vertical measurements.  Provides field and office procedures for forest mapping. Three credits. 

Forest Surveying 2
FT210B (CRN 55798-lecture, CRN 56115-lab, register for both)

Prerequisite: FT210A or consent of instructor.  Continues study of distance and direction measurement, employing transit, theodolites, electronic distance measuring (EDM), and global positioning systems (GPS). Five credits.

Focuses on beer production practices and quality control management. Covers equipment operation, maintenance, sanitation and safety.  Demonstrates wort and beer analysis, additions, fermentation management, and laboratory testing. Presents beer packaging options. 

Excel for Agribusinesses

Focuses on the Excel spreadsheet program to track inventories, maintain production records, and analyze data. Covers how to design and format spreadsheets, use formulas and functions, create charts, sort data, and more.

Spanish at Work
XAGR9804G (CRN 57171)

Covers practical Spanish terms and phrases specific to agricultural work.  Surveys cultural information about Spanish speaking people.  Includes pronunciation, technical vocabulary, greetings, and basic grammar.  No prior knowledge of Spanish is necessary.

Pesticide Courses

Pesticide Applicator Training in Spanish

This course emphasizes pesticide laws and regulations.  Pesticide labeling is stressed and appropriate calculations are demonstrated. Includes information on pesticide exposure risk, personal protective equipment, safe pesticide handling procedures, application equipment, calibration and maintenance, accident prevention, and pesticide spill management. Signs and symptoms of pesticide poisoning and first aid procedures are covered. Eight hours recertification credit available, including “core” or “other” credits.  Choose one of the following sessions:

Forestry Pesticide Review
XAGR9802F (CRN 55803)

Emphasizes pesticide laws and regulations.  Reviews the Oregon Forest Practices Act concerning chemical and other petroleum products.  Covers the fundamentals of forest pesticides, including common herbicide formulations; application and handling; labeling; safety; pest control methods, including Integrated Pest Management (IPM); and calculations and calibrations. Helps prepare the student to take Oregon’s Forestry Pesticide category Public and/or Commercial Applicators License examination.  Eight hours recertification credit available.

Structural Pest Control
XAGR9801R  (CRN 51475)

Covers proper inspection, identification, and methods of control of wood destroying organisms that attack structures in Oregon, such as termites, carpenter ants, and wood boring beetles, including Integrated Pest Management.  Emphasizes the safe handling and use of pesticides and Oregon Department of Agriculture licensing requirements.  Helps prepare the student to successfully take Oregon’s Commercial Pesticide Applicator certification exam in the Industrial, Institutional, Health and Structural: Structural Pest Control category.  Twelve hours recertification credit available.

Pesticide Laws and Safety and Directly Supervised Trainee Review

Approved by the Oregon Landscape Contractors Board for 8 CEH: Technical Subjects.  Reviews federal and state pesticide laws and the government agencies related to pesticide regulation and safe pesticide use.  Helps prepare the student to successfully take Oregon’s pesticide certification exams in Laws and Safety and Directly Supervised Trainees categories.  Eight hours recertification credit available.

Christmas Tree Weed, Insect and Disease Management Strategies
XAGR9801D (CRN 51489)

Relates to Christmas tree growers of all levels of experience.  Focuses on weed and vegetation, disease and insect management.  Presents management strategies for efficient Christmas tree production.  Incorporates plant physiology, principles of chemical control and chemical use strategies.  Stresses weed, disease and insect identification and control methods.  Ten hours recertification credit available.

General Urban Pest Control
XAGR9804B (CRN 55814)

A survey of general urban pest control for preparation to pass Oregon’s Industrial, Institutional, Health, and Structural: General Pest Control Examination.  Fourteen hours recertification credit available.

Pesticide Right-of-Way Training
XAGR9801P (CRN 51458)

This is a review session designed to present information about weed biology, identification and control practices; herbicide basics; pesticide application; right-of-way chemicals; and laws and liability in preparation for taking Oregon's Right-of-Way and Regulatory Weed Control licensing exams. No recertification credit will be available.

Worker Protection Standard
XAGR9801H (CRN 51422)

Fulfills the core training requirements to renew an Oregon Private Pesticide Applicator’s License or qualifies for four hours of other credit for any Oregon Pesticide Applicator or Consultant. Meets the training requirement portion of the small farm exemption under OAR 437-001-0057. Presents specific information related to EPA’s Worker Protection Standard (WPS) and its implementation in Oregon.  Covers the elements of this regulation in addition to other related state and federal regulations regarding pesticide worker safety.

Private Applicator License Training

Emphasizes pesticide laws and regulations.  Stresses pesticide labeling.  Includes information on application equipment, pesticide safety, pests and pest control.  Demonstrates appropriate calculations.  All in preparation for taking Oregon's Private Applicator's Licensing examination.

Introduces insect pests. Presents insect life cycles. Covers insecticide treatment.  Four hours recertification credit available.

Pesticide Ornamental Turf: Herbicide Training

Approved by the Oregon Landscape Contractors Board for 8 CEH: Technical Subjects.  Surveys the use of herbicides in the establishment and maintenance of ornamental plants and turf.  Helps prepare the student to take Oregon’s pesticide licensing examination in the Ornamental and Turf: Herbicide category.  Eight hours recertification credit available.

Registration Information

Students can register on the web at http://my.chemeketa.edu/ and have 10 working days after registration to make financial arrangements for payment of their tuition or they will be charged a $25 fee. Additional $25 late fees will be applied for accounts 30 days or more over due at the 6th and 10th weeks of each term. Maximum late fees of $75 per term will be charged. Courses will not be dropped for non-payment of classes.

If you have not attended a class at Chemeketa within the last year, you will not be able to use either of the automated systems to register. Instead:

  • For non-credit courses meeting 13 hours or more and/or credit courses: Click here to get started.
  • For workshops/courses meeting 12 hours or less:
    Click Here to request a Workshop/Conference registration form be emailed to you. Fill the form out completely and fax or mail it with your payment. The program address and fax number are on the top of the form. Mail-in registration forms are processed on a first-come, first-serve basis if the class has not already filled during earlier registration opportunities. Be sure to include your telephone number so we may contact you if the class is full. Registering at your earliest opportunity is highly recommended.
