Nursing
The Nursing Program at Chemeketa Community College prepares students to graduate with an Associate of Science Degree and sit for the NCLEX-RN (National Council Licensure Exam for Registered Nurses); successfully passing this exam allows the graduate to become a licensed registered nurse. The average NCLEX pass rate for Chemeketa Nursing RN graduates from 1989-2006 was 95.62%; the pass rate for 2006 graduates was 98.3%.
The Nursing Program is approved by the Oregon State Board of Nursing (OSBN) and accredited by the National League for Nursing Accrediting Committee (NLNAC).
The Nursing Program provides a "career ladder" format that also qualifies students, after the first year, to test and become licensed practical nurses. The program encourages graduates to continue their educational journey and earn a bachelor's and/or master's degree in nursing. Chemeketa Community College maintains partnerships with several colleges of higher learning, including Linfield College and Oregon Health Science University (OHSU).
Three courses are required for application to the Chemeketa Community College Nursing program: These courses must be completed by the end of winter term (the year of application) with a grade of C or better.
1. RD115 Academic Thinking and Reading (or higher) or placement in RD120 based on the results of Chemeketa's Reading Placement Test.
2. BI231 Anatomy and Physiology (completed within seven years).
3. MTH095 Intermediate Algebra (or higher). This requirement cannot be waived by a placement test score.
Note: Chemistry is a prerequisite for BI231. Chemistry, CH110 or 104 or 121 or 221 or successful completion of chemistry proficiency exam are acceptable. A full sequence of chemistry is recommended for students planning to pursue a four-year degree.
Most students spend one or more years in pre-Nursing courses to prepare for applying to the Nursing program. In order to enhance their chance of admission, most students complete the majority of general education and science requirements prior to application.
Enrollment in the program is limited, and the application period comes early -- several months before classes actually begin These dates are updated yearly and provided in the application information on this website.
