Nursing Careers
There continues to be a growing need for nurses across the United States (as well as internationally). Several internet resources provide information about nursing as a career: the US Department of Labor site provides a comprehensive description of nursing as a profession and Career Resources provides abundant information for those considering nursing as a career.
As a profession, nursing offers a variety of options. The role has changed much over the years and opportunities continue to expand. There are many specialized focuses - both inside and outside the hospital walls. Options you might consider are public health departments, community clinics, home health, Hospice, and many others. Nursing research is a growing focus for many in the profession. The Johnson & Johnson Website is an excellent place to investigate these and other options available to nurses today.
Locally, Salem Hospital's Career Exploration Program offers the opportunity to shadow a nurse (or another healthcare worker). This experience may be an excellent opportunity to observe the work environment and role responsibilities of nurses in the hospital setting.
These video clips provide additional information on a career in nursing: The Registered Nurse Role (general information about what nurses do); Nurses documentary (examples of how some chose nursing as a profession); Nursing, it's more than a job (focuses on men in nursing - however, provides helpful information for anyone interested in nursing as a career).
