2011 Nursing Education Curriculum

The curriculum in Nursing Education was developed to fulfill program objectives, the College requirements for graduation, and Oregon State Board of Nursing requirements for eligibility to take the licensing exams for practical and registered nurses. The curriculum includes content in Nursing and general education for the purposes of contributing to the student's continued development as a person, citizen, and worker.

Note: The number of clock hours required for the above courses is higher than the number of credit hours.  Details about clock hours for each course can be found in the Course Descriptions section of this web site.  Nursing courses are a combination of classroom and clinical hours with each classroom credit hour equal to one clock hour per week and each clinical credit hour equal to three clock hours per week.  Preparation time for class and clinical experiences is outside the clock hours required for each course.

Twelve (12) credit hours of electives as described below, combined with required courses meet Oregon State Board of Nursing minimum requirements.

3 credit hours - Approved Humanities, Fine Arts, or Communications electives with a course number of 100 or higher.

ART (Art), ASL (American Sign Language), ENG (English), FA (Film Arts), FR (French), GER (German), HUM (Humanities), JNL (Journalism), JPN (Japanese), MUS (Music), PHL (Philosophy), RD (Reading), REL (Religion), RUS (Russian), SPN (Spanish), SP (Speech), TA (Theater Arts), WR (Writing), plus this specific class: BA214.

3 credit hours - Approved Social Science electives with a course number of 100 or higher.

ATH (Anthropology), CLA (Chicano/Latino Studies), EC (Economics), GEG (Geography), HDF (Human Development and Family Studies), HST (History), PS (Political Science), PSY (Psychology), SOC (Sociology), SSC (Social Science), WS (Women’s Studies). 

3 credit hours - Approved Sociology courses (SOC prefix) having course number 100 or higher.

3 credit hours - Transferable or Occupational General Education Electives having course number of 50 or higher.

Any completed prerequisite with a "C" grade or better will fulfill this requirement.

Exceptions to the curriculum above must be submitted with the application packet on a curriculum deviation form signed by the appropriate instructor and by the Associate Dean of Health Sciences.  Curriculum deviations are valid for the application packet in effect at the time signed by the  Associate Dean of Health Sciences and may NOT be carried over for future applications.  Curriculum deviations will not be used in the point assessment if the required program course (above) has been taken, regardless of approval by Directors.

* Biological science courses must have been completed during fall term 2004 or later.
