Pathology Assistant Program (SLPA)
Program Requirements
Certification with the Oregon Board of Examimers for Speech Pathology and Audiology
In order to work as an SLPA, you must have received certification from the Oregon State Board of Examiners for Speech-Language Pathology and Audiology. To be eligible to apply for certification, a student must submit all of the following:
- Transcripts showing 45 quarter hours or 30 semester hours of speech-language pathology technical coursework (SLPA Program coursework)
- Transcripts showing 45 quarter hours or 30 semester hours of general education coursework
- Written evidence of 100 clock hours of clinical interaction
The Chemeketa Speech Language Pathology Assistant Program includes a 45 credit option for those students who have already completed the general education requirement, as well as an option to obtain an Associate of Applied Science Degree with completion of an additional 45 general education credits. A grade of "C" or better is required in all coursework.
Certificate Program (45 credits) in Speech-Language Pathology Assisting
The 45 credit certificate program includes the following courses (all courses are 3 credits each):
- ED 229: Learning and Development
- ED 130: Comprehensive Classroom Management
- ED 169: Overview of Students with Special Needs
- ED 258: Multicultural Education
- SLP180: Survey of Speech and LanguageDisorders
- SLP181: Phonetics for Language
- SLP182: Intervention Strategies for SLP Assistants
- SLP183: Introduction to Language Development
- SLP184: Language Therapy
- SLP185: Anatomy of Speech, Language and Hearing
- SLP186: Speech Intervention in Children, Adolescents and Adults
- SLP187: Clinical Documentation and Materials Management
- SLP188: Communication Disorders in Low Incidence Populations
- SLP189: SLPA Practicum I
- SLP190: SLP Practicum II
Associate of Applied Science Degree in Speech-Language Pathology Assisting
A student may take an additional 45 credits in the following areas to be eligible to apply for the Associate of Applied Science Degree in Speech Language Pathology Assisting. A grade of "C" or better is required in all coursework. The following classes may be taken at your local community college:
- Writing: WR 121 or higher, 3 credits
- Math: Math 70 or higher, 4 credits
- Computer Literacy: CA 100 or CS 101 or higher, 3 credits
- Speech: SP 100 or higher, 3 credits
- Physical Education or Health, 3 credits
- Humanities/Fine Arts, 9 credits
- Social Science, 12 credits
- Science, 8 credits
