Chemeketa Theater
2008-2009 Season
In this election year, bombarded with sound bytes, public opinion polls and media overload, it is important to consider the essential thing that makes us American: our individuality. In choosing a focus for the artistic season, we wanted to discover the essential quality of being American: our voice. So, this year, "Voices of America" will guide our viewing and discussion of the plays. These plays were chosen to offer a variety of story-tellers, and as we engage with each story, we are given an opportunity to consider more deeply where we stand, what we believe, and how we want to share our unique "American-ness" with others.

From Eric Bogosian’s Preface to the 2007 printing
Barry evolved from earlier characters I had played either in night clubs or in my solo shows. In many ways, he is my alter ego. He is energetic and dark. He is hopefully funny. He is insecure. He is a bully. And more than anything else, he has the soul of a performer, which is to say, the audience means everything to him…. This is the story of a man who has invented himself by entertaining his audience. A man who knows his worth by the size of his ratings. And this is a man who must finally face what he is, whether he likes it or not.
