Student Office Assistants
The Tutoring Center is always on the lookout for smiling and reliable office assistants. Working at the front desk, office assistants are often the first point of contact for students seeking tutorial assistance. Who can be an office assistant?
Anyone can be an office assistant. If you enjoy working with people and are able to work independently, we want to hear from you.
What does an office assistant do?
Office assistants complete a variety of tasks including:
- Welcoming students as they arrive.
- Inviting students to return, as they leave.
- Ensuring that students are registered in whatever subject areas they are seeking assistance in.
- Ensuring that students are seen by tutors in a timely manner.
- Assisting other staff in tasks relating to the day-to-day operation of the center.
What skills do I need to be an office assistant?
The skills required for the job of office assistant include the following:
- Ability to communicate effectively.
- Willingness to work with a diverse population.
- Basic computer skills.
- Ability to work independently, as well as take direction from other staff members.
Do I need to be a student in order to be an office assistant?
Yes, we primarily hire student workers.
Do I need FWS in order to be an office assistant?
We would like to encourage all FWS students to apply although it is not a requirement. We do have some limited funds to hire department funded workers.
Can I be a volunteer office assistant?
Yes, whether you are a student or community member, volunteers are a valued part of what we do. They often bring with them a mature outlook and life experiences that can enrich the lives of all students.
What are the requirements to be an office assistant?
Office assistants with FWS (or department funded) must be:
- Enrolled in 6 credit hours.
- Able to communicate effectively.
- Willing to complete training.
Volunteer and Part-time hourly employees must be:
- Able to communicate effectively.
- Willing to complete training.
What are the benefits of being an office assistant?
There are many benefits to being an office assistant and these include:
- Satisfaction from helping others.
- Refreshing your own skills.
- Improving your communication skills
- Learning to be responsible for a job.
- Listing your experience on a resume, scholarship, or job application.
- Sharing skills and knowledge with others.
- Flexible work hours (in between class times).
- Being a positive influence on the success of students.
How do I apply?
All prospective office assistants should first contact us at the Tutoring Center. You can call 503.399.5190, email tutor@chemeketa.edu, or drop in to the center (2nd floor, Building 2, Salem campus).
All office assistants are required to complete the pre-employment application with the Human Resources department (2nd floor, Building 2, Salem campus). FWS students will also be asked to visit the Job Placement Office (1st floor, Building 2, Salem campus) for a Job Referral and Agreement Form.
