Software & Adaptive Equipment
Requests should be submitted a minimum of four weeks prior to your need. Software and adaptive equipment are assigned to eligible students tasks.
How To Obtain This Service:
You can make a request for software and/or adaptive equipment from an accommodation specialist. Once your eligibility has been established you will need to complete the following steps each term:
- Submit a copy of your Student Detail Schedule
- Complete the Request for Accommodations Form
- ADA Adaptive Tables: Tables at various heights for persons in wheelchairs for use in the classroom.
- ADA Adaptive Chairs: Ergonomically designed chairs (in the classroom environment) for persons with physical disabilities.
- Audio Graphing Calculator provides the functionality of a handheld scientific calculator for people who are mobility or visually impaired. Features include: Describing of graph shape through audio tones and cues; speaking menus; scalable visual display; keyboard navigation; tactile output options. http://www.viewplus.com/
- Dragon Dictate V. 6.0 and V. 7.3: A voice input program that allows a computer to be controlled by voice. Also, allows composition of papers by talking out loud into a microphone.
- FM Loop Systems (Comtek model PR-216) An assistive hearing device enabling some persons with hearing impairments to use residual hearing. Includes a small microphone used by the instructor or speaker and an earpiece receiver for the student. http://www.tecear.com/
- JAWS (Job Access Working System) V.8 : A "talking computer" specifically for persons who are blind. The computer will read back all screen commands so a person does not have to be able to see the monitor screen. http://www.freedomscientific.com/products/fs/jaws-product-page.asp
- Magnifier/Explorer Manual Focus (CCTV) allows people with low vision to magnify textbooks or single papers. The CCTV is hooked up to a television, just turn them both on and place the paper on the platform. You can now magnify to the desired size and control brightness and contrast. - One-Handed Keyboard/Braille Keyboards: For persons who are orthopedically impaired or blind.
- Talking Calculators: For persons who are blind. A calculator that "talks" instead of having to be read.
- Tape Recorders are available for students who are approved for taping lectures. An Equipment Loan Contract must be signed each term, and the tape recorders are due back the last day of term.
- TTY is short for Teletypewriter or Teletype, a typewriter with an electronic communication channel. A keyboard version of a telephone allowing persons who are Deaf or Hard of Hearing to telecommunicate. Our front desk has TTY, 503.399.5192
- Video Relay Service (VRS) is a telecommunication service that allows deaf, hard of hearing, and speech-impaired individuals to communicate over the phone with hearing people in real-time, using a sign language interpreter. In America, the service is regulated by the FCC. Chemeketa Community College's VRS is located in our Library, Building 9, Room 224.
- Virtual Pencil is a tool for people who are visually or mobility impaired that can be used to interactively solve a math problem. The software does the job of the pencil. It moves to the right spot on the "paper", guided by the user, and inputs the answers that the user selects. It can edit numbers and variables, insert fractions or square roots or other structures, and copy whole equations or expressions. When used with a screen reader the numbers and actions are read out loud. The user must navigate the screen and provide the input. http://www.virtualpencil.com/
- Zoom Text is designed to enlarge and enhance everything on the screen, making all applications easier to see and use. It has innovative color settings letting you change screen colors for clarity and reduced eyestrain. Pointer and cursor enhancements make it easier to find the mouse pointer and text cursor. Microsoft has some accessibility features that are available for you to use.
To use accessibility features:
- Click on start menu
- Move cursor to All Programs
- Move cursor to Accessories
- Pick Accessibility from drop down menu
You will have the following options:
Magnifier
Microsoft Magnifier is intended to provide a minimum level of functionality for users with slight visual impairments. Most users with visual impairments will need a magnification utility program with higher functionality for daily use.Narrator
Narrator is a text-to-speech program that can help people with low vision set up their own computers or use other people's computers. Narrator might not perform well with some programs and only speaks English. Most users with visual impairments will need a screen reader with higher functionality for daily use.On-Screen Keyboard
On-Screen Keyboard provides a minimum level of functionality for mobility - impaired users. Mobility-impaired users will need a utility program with high functionality for daily use.
