Services for Students with Disabilities
The Services for Students with Disabilities Office (SSD) offers a range of services and academic accommodations including:
Initial Orientation and Admissions Assistance
Any new students having questions about registering for the college, including arranging for special accommodations for the ASSET placement test can contact our office for assistance.
GED Accommodations Arrangement
For accommodations on the GED or any other standardized tests (including SAT, CLEP, etc.), students should contact our office a minimum of four weeks before date of exam.
Counseling Referral
Students who need referral to appropriate agencies can contact our office. For counseling services for persons who are deaf, contact our Deaf and Hard of Hearing Services program at 503.399.5122.
Consulting with Instructors
Our Accommodation Specialist are available to consult with instructors and students regarding accommodation issues.
Test Proctoring
After having had documentation approved, students who qualify may request:
- Additional time
- A quiet location
- A reader
- A scribe to record answers
In addition to SSD's strict procedures, the instructor's written directions are followed regarding the details of the testing situation.
Advocacy and Advising
Class scheduling, and registration assistance is provided. Some students may be referred to the college's advising and counseling center for specific academic areas. SSD staff offer students suggestions in problem solving skills as well as training in self-advocacy. Also SSD provides advocacy assistance in issues of disability discrimination. For more information call 503.399.5192.
Taped Texts
Students who qualify can receive text books and handouts on tape from SSD. Due to the amount of time needed either to record or order texts from a reading service, students are required to submit textbook requests and reading schedules two weeks prior to the date needed. As much as possible, these taped texts are customized to each student's needs. To help us and our students, please develop a reading schedule for your classes as soon as possible and make it available between terms (when we record books on tape). Our office is committed to having students start any class with at least the first two weeks's worth of reading assignments on tape. YOU can help us!
Composition of Letters to Faculty
Students with unique aspects of their disability may request letters to instructors making specific recommendations on how the student can best be accommodated. These are written specifically for each student.
Student Assistants
SSD trains and supervises student assistants. These assistants may be assigned to a math class with a student who is visually impaired, or to a P.E. class with a student with a mobility impairment.
Volunteer Note-taking Assistance
On occasion student assistants may provide note-taking services.
Interpreting Services
Students who are Deaf or Hard of Hearing and use sign language, and Chemeketa staff wanting to communicate with them, can contact our office to arrange interpreting services for classes or other school-related events. Contact our Deaf Services program at 503.399.5122 (voice/tty). Please note we ask for a minimum of two weeks advance notice to arrange this.
Enlargement of Materials
Students with visual impairments needing materials (including textbooks) enlarged can stop by our office for assistance.
Financial Aid Consulting
SSD can mediate in financial aid appeals and provide academic monitoring to reinstate financial aid. Eligibility is determined on a case-by-case basis.
For more information, call 503.399.5192 (voice/TTY) or visit us in Building 2, Room 109. We ask that you contact us two weeks in advance if you need special accommodations for classes.
