Grade |
What It Means |
A |
Excellent. An indication that the student has met the stated outcomes and course criteria at the highest level, demonstrative mastery or required knowledge and skills. |
B |
Very Capable. An indication that the student has met the stated outcomes and course criteria at a high level, demonstrating mastery of most required knowledge and skills. |
C |
Competent. An indication that the student has met the stated outcomes and course criteria but with sufficient mastery of enough of the required knowledge and skills to be capable of success in other courses that require this course as a prerequisite. |
D |
Limited Success. An indication that the student has only minimally met the stated outcomes and criteria of the course but may not have sufficient mastery of enough of the required knowledge and skills to be capable of success in other courses that require this course as a prerequisite. |
F |
Failure. An indication that the student has not adequately met the stated outcomes and criteria of the course. |
I |
Incomplete. An indication that the quality of work is satisfactory, but some essential requirement of the course has not been completed and additional time is granted for completion of coursework. An "I" does not entitle a student to satisfy a prerequisite requirement for another course. |
N |
No Grade Assigned. The "N" grade is used when student participation in the course is minimal and does not warrant a grade. It may be used when the student's name is still on the final grade report and no other grade is possible. An "N" grade may not be assigned as a withdrawal or substitute for a failing grade. |
P |
Pass. Acceptable performance. A grade of "P" represents satisfactory achievement which would have been graded "C" or better on the regular grading scale, but is given instead of a letter grade. A maximum of eight "P" credits are allowed toward an associate's degree. |
NP |
No Pass. Unacceptable Performance. Does not satisfy requirements for entry into courses where prerequisites are specified. |
PL |
Pass. This grade is used to indicate satisfactory achievement of course outcomes and criteria for Credit for Prior Learning and Credit for Prior Certification. |
X |
Audit. This mark is used when a student participates in the course but does not wish to receive a grade or credit for the course. |
R |
Course Repeated. The "R" mark is used upon student request when a course taken at Chemeketa has been repeated and the student receives a higher grade in the repeated course. If a course is repeated more than once, only the original grade can be changed to an "R." This mark cannot be used to change "N" or "I" grades. |
M |
Missing Grade. This mark appears when an instructor neglects to enter a grade for the course. Students receiving an "M" should contact the instructor as soon as possible so that a grade change form can be submitted to Enrollment Services to correct the omitted grade. |
Your term grade point average is calculated by multiplying "quality points" for each course by the number of credit hours for that course. The results of that calculation are then added together and divided by the number of credits taken during that grading period.
Quality points are assigned as follows:
A = 4
B = 3
C = 2
D = 1
All other grades and marks carry no quality points
An example:
Receiving a C in a four-credit math course and an A in a three-credit writing course results in a GPA of 2.86.
((2 x 4) + (4 x 3)) / 7 = 2.857... (rounds to 2.86)
Cumulative grade point averages are computed in the same way using all courses in which a letter grade was earned.
Why won't the system let me access my final grades?
The most common reason for being unable to access your grades is that a hold has been placed on your account. Holds are initiated when you owe the college money for one reason or another (an unpaid tuition balance, parking ticket, or library fine are just three examples). When this occurs, you must take care of the hold before you will be able to view your grades. If you suspect you have a hold, you can investigate what kind of hold it is by using the "View Holds" feature in My Chemeketa.
Can I have my grades mailed to me?
No. Chemeketa no longer mails grades to students. Making grades available online is a more cost-efficient and timely way for us to deliver grades to the thousands of students who take credit courses each term. If you do not have access to a computer at home or work, you're welcome to use a computer in Chemeketa's library or in our computer labs to access your final grades. Most public libraries also have computers which patrons may use to access the Internet.
What can I do if a grade is incorrect?
If you did not receive the grade you expected in a particular course, your first contact should always be with the instructor of the course. There are many reasons why your grade might not match your expectations, but you should always begin by having a conversation with your instructor. Most faculty are not available during the breaks between terms, so please be patient when attempting to contact instructors about grades. E-mail addresses and phone numbers for full-time faculty members are available here; adjunct (part-time) faculty are listed on this page.
Can I retake a course to get a better grade?
Yes, you can repeat a course and have the higher grade appear on your transcript. After repeating the course, you'll need to complete a special form at the Enrollment Center that changes the grade from the first course to an "R." Once that's done, that course is no longer included in the calculation of your cumulative GPA.
Can I get a course and grade completely removed from my records?
No. Your transcript is a historical record of your academic activity at Chemeketa. We cannot alter the grades you've earned by changing or removing them. The only exceptions include courses which you've repeated (see above) or courses in which you've been given an incomplete ("I") grade.
How do I audit a course?
When you sign up for a course without receiving a grade or credit, it's known as "auditing." You can audit any credit course provided you pay the normal tuition and fees and complete an Audit Request Form (available at the Enrollment Center). Students who audit courses are expected to participate in course activities and complete assignments (as opposed to merely observing what occurs in the course).
