Relaxing the First Day of Class
Instead of "going over" the syllabus, while the back row either fidgets or sleeps, why not design a syllabus scavenger hunt. Ask pertinent questions about the grading system, the content, the late policies, the length of papers, when stuff is due, etc. Divide the class intro teams and sit back and sip your latte, while they are engaged in learning. The team to get all the answers corrrect wins. Then they can tell the rest of the class the answers. You can always add prizes for the winning team, if you wish. The end result is that the students remember the syllabus information!
