Remote Learning Information

This guide is designed to help you become a successful remote and/or online learner.

In this stressful and demanding time, take care of your well-being first. Try to be patient with yourself, your classmates, and your instructors. The college is here to support Chemeketa students and we will work it out together.

All classes summer and fall terms will be offered in either an Online or Remote format, with the exception of certain labs that require face-to-face interaction to achieve their learning outcomes. These labs will be offered with strict safety protocols including physical distancing, face coverings, and enhanced cleaning. 

Registration for summer classes is now open, and summer term begins June 22. Fall term registration is open for current students, and opens for new students on July 7. Fall term begins Sept. 28.

Attending Class

Your classes may be offered in one of the following formats:

  • Online Classes - offered in Blackboard
  • Remote Learning Classes - offered in Blackboard & Zoom

Remote instruction is defined as a blended delivery of online activity mixed with remote classroom meetings and instructional activities. Any synchronous/real-time instruction will be offered during the scheduled course meeting time. Proctored exams may be required in some courses.

NOTE: If you are attending a remote learning class, you may be asked to attend online meetings in Zoom, as well as complete work in Blackboard.

Read the syllabus for each of your courses and check with your instructors on how you will be participating in each class.

  • Will I Attend Class At My Scheduled Time?

    Remote Class Times

    If you are attending a Remote Learning Class, you may be asked to attend online meetings in Zoom, as well as complete work in Blackboard.

    Instructors may schedule online meetings during the same dates and times that your course would be held on campus. Some instructors may also choose to record these meetings and share links to view the recordings. Check the syllabus or contact your Instructor for each of your courses on how you will be participating in each class.

  • Practice Good Study Skills

    Study Skills

    If online learning is new to you, here are some ways to develop effective study habits.

    These ideas may help you better organize your work, engage in your class, and pace yourself to complete and submit assignments on time.

    Find out about some of the effective study habits that successful online learners use.

    Effective Study Habits

    • Log in to your classes daily. Once you get a comprehensive understanding of the class layout, a good guideline is to log in at least three times per week. Plan on committing 6-9 hours per week for each class.
    • Plan ahead and keep track of deadlines. This will help you schedule enough time to study for exams, complete assignments, and work through potential technology issues. Establish a quiet study space where you can work on homework and class assignments.
    • Participate in class communication by contributing to discussion posts and and responding to your classmates and instructors.
    • Be willing to participate in group projects and communicate via email and instant messaging.
    • Take responsibility for your own learning and be proactive. Contact your instructors when you have questions, comments or concerns.
    • Be flexible and adaptable to new experiences. This will not only help you with your learning but it’s a way to maintain a positive attitude and keep you motivated to stay on top of assignments, quizzes and deadlines.
    • Develop a support system. Friends and family can help you stay motivated.
  • How do I turn in Homework?

    Submit Assignments in Blackboard

    Assignments in your online course may be submitted digitally right here in eLearn.

    The assignment may contain instructions for completion, along with the due date. They might contain an accompanying document to be downloaded, completed and then submitted to your instructor for grading along with your assignment.

    Each assignment may include a series of steps to walk you through submitting your materials.

    Check your course syllabus or ask your instructor about requirements for homework and assignments.


  • How do I take Tests?

    Taking Tests in Blackboard

    Your online course might contain some type of test or quiz.

    If you take a test online it might include a variety of questions like multiple choice, true/false, matching, fill in the blank, and essay.

    Your instructor will let you know about any online tests in your courses along with the deadlines to complete them.

    Required Technology

    Students may be asked to use certain technology for taking tests in Blackboard such as downloading the Respondus Lockdown Browser.

    Online Test Proctoring

    Students may also be required to use a web camera for online test proctoring.

    Check your course syllabus or ask your instructor about any testing requirements.

  • How do I participate in Discussions?

    Discussions in Blackboard

    The discussion forum allows you to interact with your classmates and instructor and may be used for weekly discussions, course announcements, general course questions, or assignments.

    Discussion topics, also known as threads, will be determined by your instructor and will be arranged by forums, and individual posts within the forums.

  • What if I need to Join a Zoom meeting?

    Students may be asked to join an online meeting or class using Zoom. 

    Helpful tips for students success online:

    • Make sure you’re muted when not talking
    • Be yourself and respect others
    • Ask questions using chat
    • Use reactions to engage with your class
    • Think before you write
    • Utilize the raise your hand feature if wanting to ask a question live
    • Set up an intentional space where the class is going to happen

  • How can I access the Library?

    Library Services

    You can still do your research even when the library is closed. The Virtual Library is available online 24/7.

    Most library resources are available to you online via that library website. When prompted, log in with your MyChemeketa username and password.

  • How can I get access to the Internet?

    Chemeketa Parking Lot Wi-Fi Access

    Chemeketa Wi-Fi has been extended to specific areas of the parking lot at the Salem and Yamhill Valley campuses along with the Woodburn, Polk and Brooks centers and can be used by students staying in their cars and maintaining social distancing. Stay tuned for updates.

    If you don't have access to the Internet

    Several companies are stepping up to help provide remote access to anyone that needs it:

    • Comcast COVID-19 response: offers free WiFi for 2 months to low income families plus all Xfinity hot- spots are free to the public during this time
    • AT&T COVID-19 response: offers open hot-spots, unlimited data to existing customers, and $10/month plans to low income families
    • Verizon COVID-19 response: no special offers, but following the FCC agreement.
    • Sprint COVID-19 response: follows FCC agreement, provides unlimited data to existing customers, and, starting Tuesday, 3/17/2020, will allow all handsets to enable hot-spots for 60 days at no extra charge (I expect others will follow).
    • T-Mobile COVID-19 response: follows FCC agreement, plus unlimited data to existing customers, and, coming soon, will allow all handsets to enable hot-spots for 60 days at no extra charge (I expect others will follow).
    • Charter/Spectrum Free Internet offer for 2 months.
    • FCC agreement "Keep America Connected Pledge" stating that providers will waive late fees, not cutoff service for lack of payment, and open hot-spots.

    The McMinnville Public Library's Wi-Fi is also still active and can be accessed from your car. Information is available in this Facebook post.
