Chemeketa Community College-Otemae University exchange students are packing up and embarking on a semester-long journey, March to July 2023,  to study abroad in Japan. Otemae University is located in the suburban city of Nishinomiya, Japan. Second-year Japanese students Olivia He, Sahijpreet Dhaliwal, and Evan Brechbill will be studying the Japanese language and culture. This is the first group of Chemeketa students to participate in the program since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Studying abroad to learn the Japanese language and culture will be an immersive experience. Students will have the opportunity to interact with locals and community members in their native tongue. The group will reside in a residence dorm in Nishinomiya, which is a twenty-minute train ride from Osaka. Hisnori Hisano, who is from Japan and a native speaker, has acted as a student leader and peer language assistant to the group of exchange students to help them prepare for their journey.

“We are really looking forward to the hands-on learning experience and immersing ourselves in the Japanese language and culture,” remarked the students. “There are tiny details that make up the culture that can only be experienced in Japan. We can’t wait to try the local cuisine, as well.”

Other preparations for the students included language training, coordinating education visas, and acquiring the necessary immunizations.
