Upward Bound

Upward Bound’s educational and cultural activities help high school students explore career choices and develop the skills needed to be successful in college.

Upward Bound Services

  • Visits to colleges to explore educational opportunities
  • Cultural and recreation events
  • Assistance with SAT or ACT preparation, completing college admission and financial aid applications
  • Scholarship workshops
  • Tutoring in reading, writing, math, science and foreign languages
  • Individual and group advising
  • Career and vocational exploration
  • Summer Academy – a one week camp followed by five weeks of academic study
  • Stipends for those who actively participate in the program

Who is Eligible?

  • Currently enrolled in 9th, 10th or 11th grade
  • Attend North Salem High, McKay High or Woodburn Academy of International Studies
  • First-generation college-bound student (neither parent has a bachelors degree)
  • Students who meet federal low-income requirements
  • Plan to go to college and have academic potential
  • Be willing to participate in all aspects of the Upward Bound Program

Upward Bound Schedule

Advisor Meetings, Tutoring sessions, and Saturday Academies have moved online 

  • Advising Meetings are scheduled between UB advisors and students and held online or over the phone
  • All Upward Bound students receive access to PhotoStudy tutoring where they can access a live tutoring 24/7. Please follow up with UB staff to get your log-in and password
  • Open office hours on Mondays and Wednesday from 11:30am to 12:30pm and Tuesday and Thursday from 3:30pm to 4:40pm
  • Please contact your UB advisors for links and passwords to tutoring, open office hours, workshops, OnTrack, Magoosh ACT Prep and Saturday Academies.

  • Math: High School Math, MTH095 and MTH111
  • ENG 100: Literature Appreciation with focus on Japanese literature and culture
  • Foreign Language: Japanese
  • Friday activities (art, cooking, yoga, and more)
Aug. 9-19 Nucleus Robotics Camp

Students will receive a Sphero robot delivered to their home and participate in online lessons and challenges in block coding and Java.
Aug. 23-25 New Seniors Bootcamp

Workshops to help our Class of 2022 plan and prepare for senior year, college admissions, scholarships, etc.


Upward Bound is 100% federally funded at $366,430 annually.
