Tutoring & Study Skills

Salem Tutoring & Study Skills Center is adjusting service in response to recommendations about coronavirus. See below and check back for updates about tutoring across the college.

Service updates winter and spring 2020

March 19 Update: 

  • All Chemeketa tutoring will be conducted remotely April 6 to April 28
  • Phone and email messages will be monitored, but staff will not be on site. Responses may take longer than usual 

Current students will have access to

  • Online tutoring via eTutoring (register for spring term with CRN 75074)
  • Some appointment-based online tutoring - check back for more information
  • Additional resources available online - check back for more information

Chemeketa Tutoring & Study Skills Services

Tutorial support is offered in a variety of subjects, including –

Workshops cover a range of helpful topics, and our instructors offer personalized consultations to best support your learning. You can also use the space as an open study area. Computers, textbooks, calculators and other resources are available. The Tutoring and Study Skills Center is designed to meet your needs and support your academic success.

Our Services

  • Drop-in Tutoring

    The Tutoring and Study Skills Center offers drop-in tutoring for chemistry, math, reading, writing and other subjects. Tutoring for math courses through MTH111 and writing courses through WR121 are typically available whenever we are open. Stop by or call 503.399.5190 for additional schedule information.

    Our tutors are internationally certified by the College Reading and Learning Association. They are trained in tutorial strategies to help you succeed. No appointment is necessary, but you should come prepared to study and learn. We encourage and welcome students at all skill levels.

    The Math Hub is another resource staffed by faculty and skilled instructional assistants whose primary focus is to help you with individualized study sections of MTH020 through MTH095.  See the Mathematics page for more details about the Math Hub and the additional services they offer.

    The Salem Campus Tutoring and Study Skills Center offers free, appointment-based language tutoring for –

    The Salem Campus Tutoring and Study Skills Center offers free, appointment-based writing tutoring on Fridays. Visit or call us at 503.399.5190 to find out more or make an appointment.

  • Online Tutoring

    Online tutoring is free to all Chemeketa students through eTutoringOnline.org.

    Study skills workshops focus on developing strategies and habits essential to academic success. Writing workshops emphasize foundational writing skills for effective writing in any discipline.

  • CONSIDER BEING A TUTOR

    If you enjoy working with people, sharing your knowledge and can empathize with students, consider being a tutor. 

    Minimum Requirements
    • A grade of an “A” or “B” in subjects you are applying to tutor
    • A minimum 3.0 GPA
    • A recommendation from an instructor 
    • Paid student employees must be enrolled in at least six credit hours at Chemeketa

  • Consider Working at our Front Desk

    The Tutoring and Study Skills Center welcomes friendly, reliable people to apply to work in clerical positions. As a clerical employee, you’d work at the front desk and be the first point of contact for students seeking tutoring and study skills services.

    Minimum Requirements
    • Paid student employees must be enrolled in at least six credit hours at Chemeketa
    • Customer service experience preferred

  • Consider Volunteering

    The Tutoring and Study Skills Center is always looking for enthusiastic and knowledgeable volunteer tutors.  

    Minimum Requirements
    • Strong academic skills in the subject you want to tutor, as demonstrated through coursework or formal training
    • Strong interpersonal skills
    • Commitment to volunteering at least two full terms is preferred
